do you guys think its better to get a base rx7 for dragging over a touring? the sun/moon roof is just extra weight. sure it looks nice but extra weight. what do you guys think?

unless you are a competitive drag racer with a drag-only car, it doesn't matter. even then it doesn't matter b/c chances are you are partially tube framed, tub'ed and such.

However, if you are real tall you should consider a slicktop as the sunroof robs you of a little headroom

I am 5'10 and I had a helmet on in my Touring FD this past weekend at the autoX with no problems. Actually, I forgot my new "head" dimensions and hit my head getting out of my car lol.
I'd say don't put a preference on trim type, buy the best FD you can find, CONDITION-WISE, in your price range, disregarding R1/Base/Touring....all 3 are great...

IMO, I would worry more about whether the car you're looking to purchase is in good condition. Whether it has a sun/moon roof should be secondary. Personally, I dislike ragtops, ttops, and moonroofs because the crap leaks after a while.

The really sad part is how many "kids" are now buying this car to use as a drag racer.
Granted there has always been a large percentage of people who do this, so who am I to complain?
You should just buy yourself a nice mustang or camero. Do big burnouts & impress your friends.
The FD wasn't designed to drag race. Can you feel the axel hop? Plus in your quest to lower your ET you will increase the HP to the point you blow your engine/trans/rear-end. You & your friends then think rotary's are unreliable & label them a POS.
What it was designed to do is go around corners very fast. So unless you want to impress your friends with how quick you can turn onto the escape road, save your money for something else.
I see posts titled "My day at the track" & automatically think ROAD COURSE. Only to read it's about drag racing. I always thought it was called a "drag strip" not "drag track". So you would think the title would be "My day at the Strip"
I did take my car to the strip once (13.2 @ 107). Difficult car to launch smoothly, I was afraid I was going to break something. Plus after you shift to 3rd............ not much drama. Hold the wheel straight & keep your right foot planted on the gas.
Needless to say, I enjoy driving my car on the track during lapping days (last week) & at autocross events.

i am no kid. i know the fd was designed as a track car but i am in no way interested in tracking it. ill have more thrills dragging it instead. i know rotaries are unreliable compared to pistons and that is why im swapping it.
ive been checking autotrader lately and most fds for sale are touring version. i guess that will do me fine since im only 5'7".
when i say weekend/street drag/drag strip car, i mean im only going to be driving it 1-2x a week and it will either be street dragging, cruising, or strip dragging. i have a beater for daily use so the fd will stay home most of the time.

This reminds me of this old Motor Trend I have that has a 0-100-0 shootout with about 10 different cars and a Kawasaki 1000 Ninja. The RX-7 finished almost dead last and the main discussion on the FD was that the wheel hop made it a HORRIBLE car in a straight line. Sled Driver is right get something else to Drag Race in........

Having IRS and other suspension/setup from the factory implies a true road car, yes, but I wouldn't say the FD is a slouch in the drag department either. It is a light car, so little HP go's a longer way. But to be real "Competitive", you need GOBS of HP. And why look to anything other than a Supra as far as imports go? I wouldn't. The american solid rears are great for drag.
I must say, though, my first day at the AutoX with my car this past sunday really got me 3x more excited about my car...something about seeing those "no-tread" victoracers with pebbles stuck in them because they're hot gets my mojo working...baby....

if that got your mojo working, get your *** up to Lime Rock. 100x bigger mojo injection than autox. you'll be walking around like that Encyte guy on the commercials

Oh you can bet I'll be there soon. I'd rather track the car than autox it, but the autox is cheap and literally in front of my house, and still a fun sunday afternoon
