Where do you live, because unless you are in Japan it will be very hard to buy a Spirit R, not to mention they are very rare.
There are a few differences, nothing major.
Different exterior colors, drilled brake rotors, red calipers, different badging, Recaro seats, etc...

Lots of little engineering developments and cosmetic enhancementxs that the car got over the many years it was made in Japan and not here.
Bottom line is, you'd be better off simply developing a U.S. 93-95 with the aftermarket parts available rather than grey-marketing an "R" or attempting to update a car with the factory "R" parts.... you'll get a faster, more reliable car for a helluva lot less $$
You could go single turbo for what those ******* seats alone cost, and then grab a set of sparcos...

It would be nice to know the exact changes made from '96 - '02. Maybe the new Rotary Mag people can tell us. I know the rear subframe was changed over the years to reduce wheel hop. I might think about changing over to a newer frame if I was sure what the changes were...
I believe the ecu, wiring harness, wheels, brakes, turbo actuation, intake, etc are all different from the '93-95. Probably a lot more stuff was changed. Wish I could have read the Japanese web site over the years when the newer FD stats were there

zorba - you're looking at over A$50k-$60k for a spiritR. Sorry, I haven't got any references handy at the moment to give you an exact price range. That said, they aren't going cheap.
(a) the spiritR is a hell of a lot different to a 93-95 rx7 (which is what the average US enthusiast will compare it to)
(b) yes you could spend less money buying a 93-97 australian delivered s6-7 and spending the extra on modifying it up to spec
To list a few obvious changes:
* BBS rims
* better calipers (and painted!)
* drilled rotors
* bilstein shocks
* either red recaro seats (2 seater) or red leather seats
* Red stitched s.wheel, handbrake boot, gearknob boot/****
* spiritR dials
* badging
The differences between a pre-96 spec and a 00+ model are quite long, and have probably been listed before

zorba, i live in australia too, the benifits of the spirit r as opposed to our australian delivered ones (s6/7) is that the spirit r has more power and more torque, they are a limited edition car with extras as mentioned in other posts, also of the ones ive seen in perth, all have less then 15/20 thousand km's
of course there is a downside, it costs alot more then a series 6 (i got mine for $23000 aus) for a spirit r, dont expect to pay less then $70k, and insurance will be alot more of a hassle because the car is an import.
