It's not going to get any cheaper unless you find a used one:

Does it have to be a Mazda catalytic converter or can it be an aftermarket unit?

I suggest you replace it with an aftermarket cat. They generally run around 300-600 new, not to mention you'll get a few extra HP out of it.

Bonez high-flow cat would be a good choice if emissions are a must. Midpipe would give you more power , rotaries hate congested exhaust!
