RX7 Owners your opinions are wanted please
Dear Friends,
I am a current owner of a 1976 Corvette. I am looking to get rid of it beacause I have owned a corvette since I was 14, I am now 18.
But I do not just want any car, so I thought to look at the RX7. I know Corvettes like the back of my hand, and I am jumping into an RX7 blind and in the dark.
Would some of you write as little or as much as you want to on the car and what you think about them, I am looking to buy a 93-95. Please write anything you think I should know about them! Also, I have two questions maybe you guys can answer for me?
Can you name a company that makes the rotary engine new, also does anyone know of a company who can tell me what they think if I wanted it inspected in the D/FW area (Dallas/ Fort Worth).
Thank you,
Bill

The RX-7 is about as unique as it gets within a reasonable price range. Just don't let car's price fool you. Think of that as the "initial cost". These cars are high on maintenance and drink plenty of high octane fuel. If you are a car techie and looking for something to keep you busy and happy, then I highly recommend this car.
Only Mazda makes the rotary engines, and one built with all new parts is going to be pricey. If you need a new engine, you'll need to get a remanufactured one from a dealer or a rebuilt one from a specialty shop. They both have their ups and downs depending on what you are willing to spend.
Before you dive right in and get the car, I think you should check out the newbie links and poke around the 3rd gen forum. This car is very complicated and fragile. Until you are comfortable with its workings, be sure to ask for opinions on modifications ahead of time.

Why oh why cant people use the F'ING SEARCH ENGINE!!!! Damn dude, all you had to do was scroll down and you will see about 50 other posts asking the same question. Wow, you owned a vette a whopping 4 years, I have owned underwear longer than that. Dont buy an FD, buy a evo or rsx and call it a day.

Notice how you give your opinions, they are negitive yet they are yours, but look at yours and the others, they back up their opinions.
Why not try doing the same!

have a read through here

the FD looks good, handles well and goes well (will also respond with the right modifications). though some things get a little complex like the sequential turbo system and therefore there is a lot of areas for things to go wrong.
as you are new to the rx7 3rd gen, i think it would be very wise to have it checked out by someone in the know.

I have owned mine for 1 full year now, i love it. its spendy but very worth it IMO.
my fd is at 123xxx and im going to be rebuilding it and 1/2 bridge porting it in 3 weeks.
so far she hasn't given me tooo much trouble.
modding is spendy. gas is spendy, but ill never sell it unless i have no food and no job... and all the parts are sold...

Im sorry, Im usually really nice but Im trying to keep track of threads and when ones like this keep popping up over and over and over again.
WGC- look at it this way, you are going to spend about 12-15k on a decent 7 (note: decent) and your loan rate is going to be alot higher than a new car. Look at spending over 10k on the car and about 4-5 of that will be in the first year unless you get really lucky. Its not the entry price thats the bitch, its the cost to fix it as well as down time. If this will be your primary mode of transportation I would invest in a daily driver or moped cause your downtime can last up to months at a time.

Does anyone in the D/FW area recommend a good place or dealership to have them looked at for a PPI? (Pre Purchase Inspection)
Also, Mav, I sell car we have a RSX S type, on the lot it's cool but not pleasing! My idea of a car is to not be like every other **** head at my school with the everyday Honda or Toyota. That is why I owned the vette and I am looking at the RX 7 for the reasons of the engine I find a yearn to learn how it works with my hands and what not I know how it works in theroy but it's different when your hands get into it.
Friends thank you for your replys, opinions and ideas. Please keep them coming also, would someone mind giving me a rough price on a stock engine price with a turbo.
Also for you engine guys with the stock V8's and what not I know they can not hold more then about 11 lbs of boost with out blowing the rings, is there a limit to the rotary engine, and if there is how do you make it so it will withhold high amounts of pressure and heat?
Thanks,
Bill

A stock reman will cost you around 2k from malloy mazda (which alot of people use), turbos are a crap shoot as to the price. Porting and upgraded apex seals will be extra. There are alot of good shops in texas that you can deal with.

Bill,
Please excuse the above flamers. I seriously recommend that you avoid a rotary-engined car until you have significant time and money to devote to it, as well as another (piston-engined) daily beater to take the daily wear and tear. RX-7's simply have too much maintenance overhead in terms of time and money to be worthwhile at this point. You would also be wise, if you did decide to buy one, to keep at least the cost of the car as reserve cash on hand (or have very generous and well-prepared parents) to dish out at a moment's notice for a new engine, new turbos, etc, as expensive parts fail without warning.
While this is the case with all cars, naturally-aspirated piston-engined cars (or cars that are new and under warranty) are much less of a financial risk to the owner.
If you are intersted in buying one, there are some very good points to be found here:

I said this with someone else but if you do buy one, DO NOT JUST START BUYING PARTS. Sit down with a local shop that knows 3rd Gens (ask around first) and map out everything you want to do to the car. If the shop is worth their salt, they can set you up with a timeline of what you need to do before going forward to keep the car stable and reliable. If you just start modding the car without a plan in place, there is a good chance that you can destroy the engine and ruin your enjoyment.
