RX7 Newbie Help (oil leak?)

Hi Guys!

I'm a RX-7 Newbie and I was inspecting my engine bay today...and found this. (attachement) It looks like I have a turbo oil leak or the seal is bad. It's the connection between the turbo outlet to the intercooler. It's a 94 FD with 70k miles with original everything. I'm just wondering if this is a major problem, or do I just need to replace a seal...

Thanks in advance! George

well. for what i see, you need to change it. there might be a crack . the crack might be the connect of the cross-over pipe and the stock y-pipe. you should change it as soon as possible. Go buy a 1999 efini y-pipe. it will be alot better then the one your car have. Good luck!

My coupler was split and looked like that, only not as oily as yours. If your also not making full boost, I'm sure you have a split coupler and needs to be replaced.

If the car is running properly, the coupler is ok. Just tighten (or replace) the clamp.

THANKS FOR THE HELP GUYS!

My boost #s looks good, 10-8-10 pattern... hopefully is just the coupler. I'll probably tear into this this weekend and see if I find any surprises.

Something is not quite adding up in my head though. Where is the oil actually coming from? Is it from the turbos? or is it from

^ yeah, the oil is most likely from your turbos leaking and/or blow-by.

Here is another thread going right now that is similar to your issue.

As most people said, check for cracks and replace the coupler if needed. It might just need to be tightened down.

Cheap insurance, ditch the stock coupler there for a silicone coupler. The stock one fails frequently from all the heat, and it will likely be a problem in the future.

The stock PCV system pulls oil vapor from the oil pan into the primary turbo's inlet. A stock, properly running car will likely have oil in and around the IC pipes and intercooler. A catch can is the way to permanently solve the problem. Doing the '95 PCV mod is a good first step, though.
