RX7 Newbie

well first off id like to say hi to the board my name is steve in a 22 year old Loan CSR out of ohio. Now that thats out of the way. I am currently driving a 98 ford mustang V6 with a boatload of mods done to it but am tired of only being able to run high 14 sec timeslips and actually am tired of the domestic scene and do not wanna get a V8. Ive thought about a few imports the usual civic SI the eclipse GST or GSX but i just love the RX-7 but always thought there was no way i could afford one. Well out of boredome i looked on cars.com at some 93 used RX-7 and to my surprise saw a few going from 10k up to 14k which is in my price range. After searching the net i found this board to be cool so i decided to join. Without flaming me i have a few questions that if u could point me in the right direction to research or give me some answers id appreciate it. Ive heard a few horror stories about the rotary engine but this was all coming from domestic guys. The used cars that i saw were in the 50-60k mile range. What does a rx-7 usually run to as far as mileage life? I will mod it but as of now im ignorant to the aftermarket of the RX-7. But i will keep it streetable and would like to c maybe low 13' sec times?? Any help u guys could give me would be appreciated and hopefully ill be sticking around for awhile with a RX-7 next year.

I was just gonna direct you to the newbie thread, but since you've found it on your own, I won't do that.

I'd just like to add that low 13's is easy with an FD. It can be done with ~$2k in mods.

The *stock* engine life ive seen anywhere from 80k to 120k usually after a rebuild is necesary. It really all depends how fast they got the reliability mods on there. The sooner the better.

well i have read the extras and i must say whoever wrote them out did an excellent job. I must admit that i am kinda scared now. Seems to be a lot to worry about the rotary. This car would not be my daily driver during the cold winter months but i would like to be able to daily drive it during the hot spring summer and fall months. Living in Ohio (akron) i know of one import repair shop and have seen quite a few 2nd and 3rd gen RX-7's there so i assume they know how to work on them. The mileage thing does scare me tho it has been burnt into my domestic mind that import cars can last well into the high 100k mile range. Purchasing an RX-7 with 60k miles already makes me wonder if i wouldnt run into an expensive rebuild sooner. Nonetheless thx for the help and the great info and the journey starts now. I wont be plannin on purchasing my next car until march so i have plenty of time to research on the RX-7 until then. Looks like i found a new home here.

If you are gonna buy an FD with 60k on the original engine, I would start saving for a rebuild immediately.

mmmm have a mechanic look at it,

plz dont trust any sites that teach you "what to look for" in a used fd,

cuz you are not capable of doing that yourself,
you need to have a reputable rotary mechanic look it over.

i tried doin it myself.. and got fucked over
