Rx7 handling @ 120+mph

First off i'd like to say hats off to all the FD owners out there, always been a huge fan of the 3rd gens, and would love to get one. My question is how does the 7 handle at 100+mph stock and then with aftermarket suspension? Is it a smooth ride at this speed? I kno each vehicle will vary and its all relative to what car u compare it too. Now at 90mph my 96 chevy s10 feels like shes had enough even with perfect alignment and 3/5 belltech drop. My brothers 03 Mach1 stang starts to get a lil uncomfortable at about 115mph running 1.5" drop springs. In comparision to some other vehicles u guys drive would u consider your FD solid at higher rates of speed.

be easy on a newbie, and yes i did search.

thanks
mark

My FD Hauls ****...

the Suspension that comes with the FD R1/R2 types are pretty stiff..
and under speed it handles well no vibrations or pulling.
its not too often that you will take it up 100+ mph but i i think she handles fine..

with my FD (intake,down/mid pipe, exhaust and PFC) i did 145 and it felt like it was n/p. i have stock R1 suspension with tien springs. nothign really special but FD's can handle high speeds well. be safe hanging turns tho, spun out with it twice already. lucky enough not to crash.

I go 110 all the time down this empty highway (The 113). For those in the Davis/Sacramento area you should know what I'm talking about.

Acceleration is effortless and stable as hell at high speeds.

I did around 145 a week after i bought my 94 all stock, and it felt stable at that speed. After getting some mods (see sig), i went around 145 again, and it felt even more stable then before.

The stock suspension was made damn perfect!!

The FD is the most stable car at high speed that I have ever driven. Much better than my old 911SC.

I havent got a car with which I can compare it, however at 170Mph it started to vibrate some and I was a little scared that the hood would come loose. Furthermore its rock solid. I have some espelir lowering springs on it and further the stock r1 dampers.

Aerodynamics plays a bigger part in the high speed stability than the suspension. The car is just extremely well designed and plants itself as you go faster. If you want a good idea of how the car does at high speed, ask around in the Race Car Tech sub-forum. Those guys have lots of high speed track experience (read: making turns at speed) not just going fast on public roads.

Rx7 has 50/50 weight even the older ones have this. If you can imagine holding a pair of nice ****, you can get an Idea of how an rx7 handles.
A rule of thumb I
use when driving. If the sign says 55mph turn, I reduce speed to 100mph to be safe. If im driving dads truck i would reduce speed to 70 mph. This is only on dry roads. Be very coutious in rain. couple years ago I was doing 100 on freeway in the rain, I went to exit and as i turn the wheel I started to spin out, did 2 full 360s and landed in mud on side of freeway hole car covered in mud. I was lucky, drive very slow in rain casue car is very light with big tires.

How on earth can you compare **** to the handling of an RX7?!?!!! lol you madman

I also testify to RX7 handling in the wet. A while ago i was on a two lane road doing 50mph with a slight camber to it, driving along next to a huge truck with a car behind me. The truck signalled to come into my lane, and didnt see me i guess because i was so low. I could only go forward as the car behind was blocking me in, so i squeezed the throttle in third and rather than the whole car going forwards, the back of the car went sideways....so i was doing 50mph on a wet road going sideways facing a huge truck thats changing lanes into me!!! I had to toot loud while controlling the slide to make him stop coming into my lane...

Wow, was that supposed to make you look/seem cool? Do you really do that? Are you that much of a careless driver?

Thumbs up

i usually go out late at night when no one is on the freeway....then i punch it to 180+, crank some tunes, turn the lights off, and let go of the wheel.....the car drives itself.

Get the hell outta here! How is that pick up truck hauling your ***** keeping up??lol To let go of the wheel @ 160 you gotta have a big *** set...no lights, ha!

I did run it up to 155 when i got it back in 98. It had worn out stock suspension/tires and it felt ok. It felt way better than most passenger cars at 80.
Fast forward a few years, Gab coilovers w/unobtanium bushings and a fresh set of tires and as mentioned before its shocking to look at the speedo and see 130+ and feel like its 70!

straight line you are going to be ok. i took a pretty long off ramp at about 120+ the car was fine until i started applying the brakes. i applied them pretty steadily coming off the ramp once the road was straightening out. the car got squirrely, so i had to back off them a little.

just something to think about. not everything about a cars stability has to do with the suspension and tires. the car was rock solid 'til i hit the brakes. also, keep in mind i have relatively new slotted rotors, hawk pads, s/s lines, and rebuilt calipers.

(the point of this post isn't whether i should have been going that fast or not, so please, don't start in)

The car is suprisingly stable the only thing i have ever had a concern about is the weight when going so fast that the wind takes some weight off the rear wheels, i hit a lip to go over a bridge and it got a little scary and i felt like i was going to die! haha Since then i have upgraded to tien flex coilovers and i have never felt so safe at high speeds along with a set of sway bars. The stock suspension is pretty good when all the parts are functioning properly, my shocks were shot.

in 100% stock form the car feels even more stable at 120MPH than it does at 80. At 100+ the aerodynamics really kick in. I've had my car up to 155 but let off cuz of nerves, the car handled great but I kept getting these thoughts of "what if I get a blow out" yikes!

Ricer or Racer?
All I know is, there is one big problem with the FD. Everyone else on the road is always in your way.

well if i have to exceed 120 (which i done about 6 times total in the FD) it was purely on a dead freeway..no cars at all in sight and im in the left lane..

when i did a 145 run, the car was very smooth, the steering wheel didnt shake like most cars i seen going at this speed..it was very smooth and car def wanted to go a bit more..

thanks for fast responses, and the answer is more than i wanted to hear, i bet u guys find that this could get you in trouble on occasion knowing that that trooper probably wouldn't be able to catch up to you anyway.

Now do you guys think the spoiler has anything to do with it? on the R1 n i agree to say that if you don't have a decent set of tires your pushin your luck

anyone get nailed at this speed?
