Question RX7 FD3S Series VIII

Hello all RX-7/rotary enthusiasts. My name is Steve and i recently bought an FD Series VIII yesterday and i am rapt. I love the car, how it handles, how it drives, everything. It blows me away. From driving a 2nd hand camry to an FD is a big step. ^^

The car is immaculate and is stock as a rock. no mufflers, stock rims, stock bodykit, everything is stock.

I have to say i dont know much about mechanics but I want to modify my RX7. I would like to change the muffler and get a turbotimer, ECU, nicer rims, mazdaspeed kit and the like.

I was wondering if anyone could help me by tellin me what I should modify first? And can someone tell me how to take care of my beloved RX7? I heard with rotaries u need extra TLC with it? :|

Thank you.

start doing reliblity mods first. nah perhaps it might be more worth it just to start saving money for a new engine. you can spend over 2-3k for relibility mods and still end up popping your engine. for that much you can just buy a new engine

Most would say that first thing would be to get a down pipe to replace your pre-cat because it hold back a lot of heat and will deteriorate clogging your main cat. Next most seem to think that boost and water temp gauges are a good mod. The stock water temp gauge won't tell you there is something wrong till its too late and the boost gauge will help you gauge if your turbo's are running correctly. Next people say either get rid of your AST(air seperator tank) or replace it with a metal one. The stock black plastic ones have a tendency to slit at times spilling your coolant all over your engine. All and all if you do the work yourself your probably at about 350-400 dollars for parts for these basic reliability mods.

Also the for sale part of the forum is a good place to get some of the stuff you may need for a good price. So don't forget to take a look there before going out and buying stuff.

hey stephen, nice work with the fd, first off get it breathing better with an exhaust and intake. then its up to you how far you wanna go, series 8 turbos are good for 300 rwhp, though youd be looking to upgrade your intercooler, preferably radiator and get a new ecu at that point.

your lucky tho, we got some really good rotary tuners down here, im sure they will be happy to help you with anything that happens or that you want to do

since it's a jspec car it already has a downpipe, and the Air Seperation Tank isn't 10 years old.

i'd get a boost guage and water temp guage asap. the thing to remember about the FD is that (and i believe this applies to the series 8 ECU just as well) if you over boost, the ECU can't do anything but a really rough fuel cut. which isn't very reliable or healthy. and why alot of US FD's lose engines with drivers that aren't that familiar with them.

you can do several air flow mods, as long as you keep the boost in check at stock levels. wheels are just for looks and the same with a body kit so go nuts here.

the only way to up the boost is to get an ECU. you can get a japanese chipped ecu but might as well bight the bullet here and go stand alone. which one is another topic, hehe.

-edit. got pics?

particleeffect,
absolutely correct about the new ECU's. they are even touchier than the old ones. even using a muffler that has too much flow (causing you to boost up faster) and you can cause problems. just make sure you get parts for that year. i know that sounds obviouse but it's easy to make mistakes if you don't know what to look for. good luck with the car!
