Efini is to Mazda as Lexus is to Toyota. It's just a brand name they used in Japan to try to give the RX7 a more exclusive image.
So Efini and the US RX7 are essentially the same cars.

Just a bit more power and different badges. I'm sure there was also other additions to the Efini FD, but those are the only ones I am aware of.

I know!! im just answering to 93BlackFD... :P I have the efini rx7 here in Brunei so i know their differences!!!
the truth is if you were to compare stock to stock from a Jspec(efini) to a U.S. R1/R2... the efini is "slightly" faster because
1. no-precat
2. no emission stuff (so its lighter... dont know if its true tho hehe)
to conclude this, they are both the same!! hehehe

Let me clear things up...
The Efini is the model or name for FD3S...or the 3rd gen rx7
The Savanah is the name for the 2nd gen rx7

I have an 1992 Efini...
It's a 4 seater.. and the only differences I found when comparing it to other Series 6 FD's is the fact it has twin oil coolers, the interior is slightly different, and it seemed ever so slightly faster than the other stock Series 6 FD's I've been in / driven, but a Type R Series 7 is as fast.

I also have an Efini. That is a touring model but all the models from japan come with a Efini badge.
All the FD's till 1996 that are from japan wear the efini badge. After that it became the Mazda badge.
In japan all the older cars had a different mark. Such as Astina(323) Eunos (cosmo) Familia etc. ect. In japan it was all sold separately.
But here in Holland it was all under Mazda. Dont now how that is in the USA?
Some FD models before 1996 wear the Mazda badge but they where put on by the owner to make it look a newer model

I have a 1992 'Efini' RX-7, Japanese right hand drive car. (I took off all the 'Efini' and RX-7 badges though, because I enjoy confusing people- Random Australian: "Wow, is that a Corvette?")
Mine has 4 seats from factory.
I believe (cant confirm, just what I read in text books) that the Efini does have slightly more horsepower than the US market cars.
Mine has no "pre-cat". Never seen a "pre-cat" before, but I think its some sort of smaller heat radiating device, mounted in the engine bay on US models... :p Being in Australia, I've never seen a US market car, but I read these forums to increase my knowledge :p
Apart from the air pump and normal cat converter, my car has no other emissions stuff built into it.
Other than that, no difference really.
I believe that yes, until 1996, all Japanese FD cars wore the 'Efini' badging. Yes, 'Efini' is to Mazda, what Acura is to Honda. An attempt to make a "high end" badge.
We have 10+ FD cars we have imported to Australia from Japan, plus parts. Every one, apart from those post-1996 cars, have the 'Efini' grey rectangular badge. My car also came with a green 'Efini' logbook. Most of the cars have the triangular "infinity" snake chrome badge. A couple have had the circular 'eternal flame' badge too, but that may have been added by owners in Japan... I dont know.
