RX-8 rack and pinion on FD

Hello, I just want to ask if someone has put a 4.44 stock rack and pinion from the RX-8 at his FD.

I am ready to buy the rack and pinion, do you think I will need any other part?

I mean some "spacers" that are used where the transmission saft joins, do I need them or I can use mine (FD)?

If the width of the Rx-8 rack from inner tie rod to inner tie rod is not the same as the Rx-7 rack, the RX-8 rack may create a bump-steer issue.

i am still trying to figure out if he is talking about a differential or a steering rack... since he mentions bolting up to the transmission?

Yeah I think he means "ring and pinion". I didn't read it close enough to see the error.

from an RX-8 owner. Do I need anything else?

Has anybody an RX-8 4.44 ring and pinion at his FD?

Just speculating, but off the top of my head I can think of two potential problems. One, 4.44 gearing is very very short. This works in the 8, because it has a 6 speed. The FD got boned up the butt and Mazda's cheap *** gave us a 5speed. Though you could easily put a whole gear between 4th and 5th, I think you'll see yourself driving around in 5th all the time just to get the car above 50mph.

Which brings me to my second thought. We all know the RX-8 tranny is too weak to take the power than an REW puts out, so logically, the ring and pinion are probably also going to be too weak to handle the power.

Remember, I'm just speculating here. I haven't tried it, and I can't think of anyone who has. But, by all means, we're a very enterprising group here. Give it a shot and report back with the results.

The RX-8 actually has a very short 6th gear, shorter than 5th in the 5 speeds.

consider the fact that the RX-8 makes 20hp less and 60tq less thank an FD, and doesn't take as well to mods as the FD, and you can see why it doesn't hold up.

I am planing using the car at track, so if I don't use 4.44 I will go all the way to 4.77. About the weakness of the RX-8 tranny: I am only using the ring and pinion, witch do not have weakness problems.

Anyone has tried this?

A few have done 4.77 for track oriented setups. No one has tried to use the 4.44 from the RE yet. The later models JDM used a 4.33 in the FD so 4.44 isn't a big step. The JDM trannys also used a lower 5th gear which helped acceleration - check the FAQ for more on that topic.

Was a 4.44 crownwheel and pinion for an FD on Yahoo a couple of years ago, seeing they list 4.77 to suit both the 7 and the 8, it more than likely bolts up.......
