do you think the HID system for the 8 would fit on a FD? Im talking just the bulbs and the little amp for the lights.

I'm not sure aobut the bulb, but the ballast would I think, but why pull one of an rx8 instead of just buying an HID kit?

Check out this page, about half way down is an HID kit. Fits in the stock popups, and works pretty well from some testimony I've read.

More than likely cheaper than buying the HID's off an RX-8 from Mazda anyway.

What about other (universal) HID kits out there? Do you have to do extensive modifications to fit them in there?

Not really, one of my favorite mods I've done. Better hurry up and buy though, they soon wont be legal to sell. They're bright as hell if you cant tell from the pic. Sorry, i dont have any projected light pics.

technically hid retrofits are already illegal and have been for some time. you might get busted by the local police for this but it is unlikely. the current crackdown is by the NTHSA on businesses selling kits to retrofit hids into halogen lights. kits that use dot approved hid housings are not affected. they have been getting many complaints about glare and this is their effort to do something about the situation.

kits like this fine and yet inexpensive piece are still legal:

They are very bright and require proper baffles inside the lens assy. The lens assy. also has to be properly designed for the shape of the light emitting region (different shape compared to an H4 filiment bulb). They also require by law "auto leveling". On the RX-8 this is done with sensors on the front and rear suspension (pass. side only - very cool devices). These feed info to the leveling controls on the headlamps.

There is a low probability that you will be caught with the conversion kit, but if you are they can confiscate it. Note that blue led washer nossles are also illegal, and some have been ticketed for having them too.
