RX-7 vette running lights conversion

I just thought I would share this little mod I did today. It is totally reversible, and takes about 7-10 minutes to do. I have always liked the vett and other GM orange daytime running lights, and I wanted something similar for my 7. I'm sure this mod has been done, but I can offer detailed pictures.

All I really did was swap the turn signal wire with the daytime runner wire. Simply remove the plastic inner (yellow) guard from the water proof harness, and push out the two outer pins (red and green) to swap them. Plug it back in and you have it. The only problem is that the blinkers blink about 2/3 speed faster, although I think that some of you ricers out there may like it. I am going to see if I can swap the bulbs to get the same resistance or modify the resistance. Later I am going to make them true daytime runners by wiring them into an auxiliary on source, but for now, this is good enough for me.

You like those running light things? I think they look pretentious ... like "Hey get out of the way! No ***** coming through!"

I actually like the Vette with the daytime lights but thought it was weird since it supposed to be illegal to use parking lights when you are driving.

Anyhow, since i've thought twice about it because I don't want anything that makes my car more noticable to the Chipy's.

It's ok, I have no ***** and that's fine. I like them because they stand out and that is safer, and yes pretentious.

Why do that when you could just turn on your parking lights by yourself? You have more control then to have always have that on when you turn the key.

You are right, and maybe I will wire in a parallel auxiliary switch so that I can turn them on without the other runner and tail lights on.

wouldnt it be easier to just switch the bulbs in the turn signal hjousing. Just cut the part where the bulb goes into and switch them around...food for thought

Different fittings. I tried that first. As you can see by the final image, I have some other issues to work out, like getting rid of a 16 second pass from under the hood, but I thought this would be fun to divert my attention. It really is reversable, and is much quicker than modifing anything permanent.

i was talking about actually switching the fittings by cutting the wires and rewiring it back up.
like the turn signal fitting wired to the inside light wiring and vice versa.

That's what I essentially did, only without cutting any wires. There is only one harness. See pic. Three wires, two hots (red for turn, green for daylights) and one common ground. The bulbs are not colored, it is the plastic housing that is tinted. Like I said before, the only problem is that the flashers blink faster due to the different resistance of the two bulbs (the blinker is dual filament ).

Maybe I am miss reading what you are saying.

It is up on four jacks. I have 6 and left one out by accedent and tucked it out of the way so that it wouldn't get jacked while at work. I didn't notice it in the pic, but it does look like I am holding it up by the bumper. I learned that lesson from a former local mechanic/human.

somebody needs to figure out how to keep the fog lights lit without the headlights up. If anyone has any ideas or has done this, please share.

I'll see about that one, I would like to do the same for the above lites. I am not sure if the fogs are switched by hot or ground. When I installed my alarm, the P-lights were a negative pules, so who knows.

When I went with the FEED front end and the 99-spec driving lights, I had to do a bit of modifying to get the bulbs in the housings. In addition, I simply cut the wires and rerouted them to an unused power block in the fuse box located in the nose (in my case, the airpump.) They come on whenever the ignition is on and I don't have to worry about remembering to turn them off either. I live in God's waiting room and the increased visibility is definitely a plus with the gereatrics that drive around here. My next phase will be to wire in a set of higher wattage lights. PIAA makes a round 35 watt fog that's about $100 which should increase the brightness over those wedge bulbs considerably.
