Well i only have 10k and i would like a Gen 3 Mazda Rx-7.

People told me that the reliability is crap and i will spend 6k on replacement parts alone.

Well so before i buy it i decided to ask you guys what are your responses on reliability.


What did you buy for your rx-7.(not aftermarket, just replacement)

 

a new motor 3 weeks after i bought the car... and that was only with 15k miles original miles on it. 10k is no where near enough money to buy and maintain one of these cars imo you would need at least 15k.

 

while not everyone will have that much bad luck yes FD's are not exactly cheap to own. 10k will get you a decent Rx7 perhaps with a newer motor but that all depends on where you buy it. Like I said before its not a cheap car to own, if your buying the FD for a daily driver you are better off with a honda unless your rich.

Well what about if i get a heavily used one with 130k miles for 8k, and buy a new motor for ~2.5k.

How long would that last me and what would break down?

 

In Japan perhaps. Where can you buy these decent $10k FDs in the US? I've never seen a $10k FD that I was even remotely tempted by.

 

I got my FD for 10k, but I was lucky.

FD's are as reliable as you make and treat them. You might not find a manual FD for 10k, but I don't think an auto one is out of the question.
When I got mine, I swore I'd keep it stock, 4k later... Though I did spend a grand on replacing broken/worn out parts and maintenance.

 

Well, with $10K total to spend and if you find an 8K FD w/ 2.5K for new motor...you still have a lot of other things to account for: other reliability/preventive mods and ER problems/stuff that can occur at ANY moment. I would recommend saving another $5K at least as someone had mentioned above. BTW, will you be doing the labor yourself or paying a shop to do it? Nothing wrong with paying a shop (reliable!) doing it...it's just most times labor outcosts the parts/repairs itself.
