RX-7 Newbie

Hey..Im in the market for a 3rd gen rx-7, I really just started to learn more about how awesome this car is. Ive alwasy seen them on the road, and thought they looked really nice, but I had no idea of the performance of these cars. My question is I see on this forum Rx-7's that are R1's. , Tourings, Twin turbo, ect.
Can someone explain to me the differences, im a little confused.
Are all the stock 93-95 Rx-7's Twin turbos, or are some just single turbos. Also are there any differences in the engines from 93 to 95. I live in New Jersey, after researching a bit, I hope to get one within a few months, anyone know of a reputable dealer in Jersey that deals with these beauties. Thanks, any info would be appreciated.

All 93-95 RX-7s are twin turbo, some people have converted from twin turbo to single turbo. There are no differences in the engines in those years.
"R1" and "R2" were packages offered in 93 and 94. From what i hear there are no "R" packages in 95. I have heard that in 95 they had the "r" package options they just didnt call it "R1" or "R2". I am sure some one will clear that up.
You had the following models:
base
touring
"R1"
"R2"
I believe in 94 it started; but I know they had it in 95 the P.E.P. package(Popular Equipment Package)
later.

Obviously, you're not ready for a FD yet. Do more research about the car before you buy it. We don't want any more wrecked FD's.

why does he need to know about the car before he gets one?? Why can't he just buy one? something special you have to know to drive these cars or what?

I'm looking for one too.

Personally, if you want the car and you don't know much about it I don't see a problem with asking a question here. Why not? Most people know salesmen don't know anything about the car so where else can people get answers?

Anyway, there are some good sites around that have information that can help new FD owners and people looking to get an FD. A good place to start is here:

http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/FAQ.html

Basically, before you think about getting an FD, think about your cash flow. Some people have problems with their FD's, some people don't. But you need to think about money for car maintenance should you need it.

Next, if the car needs to be worked on, do you have the tools and time to do it yourself? Do you have any mechanics in the area that know how to work on rotary engine? Not just any shop can or will work on rotary engines. Most Mazda dealerships usually do more damage then repairs, so you want to avoid them for any work that needs to be done.

Weather is another thing. If you live in an area that has snow, you'll need a second car. Even if you don't it's nice to have a second car just for those times when the FD isn't driveable. Also, gas, the FD isn't a Civic, so it's not going to get good gas mileage. Estimate 13mpg, so if you plan on it for a daily driver, you could be spending some cash on a lot of gas.

Read the guides on the website up above and then if you have more questions, post back. Good luck!

I agree with mightyslash & JoeD to some extent. 3rd gen's are SO respected among rotor heads that it almost pisses me off to hear of some guy that wants one and doesn't know **** about them or rotary engines for that matter.

BUT!!!!

At the same time. We all started somewhere......
I would just like to see more people get into rx7's because their obviously superior engine, not just 3rdgen's because they look totally bad ***.

Thanks your concern JoeD...but Im really not worried about wrecking a car, Im a pretty smart and experienced driver. Im not new to high performance cars either, I previously owned a 1988 911 Turbo.

For the rest of you Thanks for your help, I'll just dig into these forums and find as much information as possible.

As for throwing money into a car, and maintenance, try owning a 911 turbo.
