RX-7 article in this month's Grassroots Motorsports Magazine
On Page 99 of the November 2007 issue of GRM there is a 5-page article on the FD. It's basically an overview/buyer's guide that covers some of the basic stuff like recalls, maintenance and known issues. Imagine my surprise when I saw an action shot of my own '93 BB at Summit Point spread across two full pages The picture isn't even a good one -- it's right after I had bought my car and slapped the wheels from my daily driver on it because the tires were better. The broken (at the time) gas door is flapping in the breeze There are a number of other, much nicer cars pictured in the article as well and a link to rx7club.com.

Haha no, I'm not complaining -- it's pretty cool to open up a magazine you read every issue of to see yourself in it. I just think it's really weird they'd use such a bad picture when there are many better ones out there.
When you participate in a track event you have to sign a waiver to enter the premises that, among other things, gives your consent to allow them to use your name, pictures, and video for promotional or other purposes without limitation, compensation or permission. Additionally there are professional photographers present that take pictures of every car on-track and sell them.

I'd write a "hey, that's my car!" letter to the editor and include a current pic. They might run it in the letters section of a future issue, and would probably dig hearing from you.
Of course, if the car had stock wheels and the gas door wasn't broken, you wouldn't be able to tell it was your car .

I think that's a great action picture...warts and all. Way better than a static parking lot shot. Congrats!
I also thought it was a decent article. As a fan of the car, I wish they'd spent a little more time on the car's chassis and handling attributes rather than engine/reliability issues. Especially when many of the ones they mentioned are relatively easy to correct. But on the whole....OK.

I might just do that. They sourced the pic from EuroImage Photography which comes out to all the NASA events around here and snaps pics of all the cars. I know they had access to much better pics than that. Maybe they were trying to make a point?

Were these taken at VIR?

Yup, my grandparents live in Roanoke actually. I never had my FD at VIR in that trim before, so it must have been taken in '06 at Summit Shenandoah. After my crash on Summit Main later that year I removed the fog lights because one was broken.
edit: oh the two small pics were taken on Summit Main in August.

As a photojournalist and photo editor who owns his own 3G RX-7, I can tell everyone here there is no legal protection to privacy in public places. The photographer and magazine are within their there rights to make and use the photograph in an editorial function, particularly in this instance. An ad would be a different story.
From an editor's position, the reason that this photograph was probably used is because it demonstrates that we own a real road warrior when it comes to high performance "sports car" function. It's not a show car magazine that is only interested in "garage queens" so the gas cap flying only ads to the action quality of the photograph. The breed is about 14 years old and is still one of the most prized automobiles you can own in the sports car tradition. Why? Because it was purpose built to race right from the factory. Grassroots Motorsports is a no-nonsense, highly professional publication that is interested in showing the way real people race their cars.
If you get your car photographed and published in this mag, in particular, it only makes your car, and all our cars, more valuable.
I'd send them a thank you note.
