Runs like silk......
Just picked up my car from Pettit's........what a nice smoooth ride. For some of you who have been reading my post, I have been wrenching for some months now trying to get this "7" in perfect mechanical condition and adding numerous "have to have" goodies. It has 33k miles now and just when I thought I was finishing up, an APEX seal problem! I have only had it for 3k miles and apparently it had a crack seal which finally reared its ugly head. So I took it down to Pettit's and they built a 3mm motor with new housings, street port, efini Y, and added '99 J-Spec Turbo's. I was extremely happy with their work and attention to detail. Though I am in the breakin period (with lower boost for 1k miles) the handshake between the primary and secondary turbo's is seamless. Can't wait to break it in and let it roll!! I will be bringing it back to them to have it dyno'd on their new setup after I get some miles. Until then I will be enjoying the "7" the way it was meant to run.........

oh yea
Definitely let us know about the 99 J spec turbos and what kind of $$ was involved. If I ever had any trouble I think I would do the exact same thing you did so knowing what that would take would be interesting

I had lots of work done by Pettit, too, back in April 2000. They did a whale of a job. I blew Apex Seal at 104K on original engine (I'd had it since '97 when I got it with 54K on it) so they did a street port, rebuilt the turbos, clutch, light flywheel, etc... The best part was when I flew down on Friday, spent the night driving it around to put some miles on it so they could check everything the next morning, then, when I went back Saturday morning Cameron Worth was there and he personally did the turbo linkage between the primary and secondary. I rode, he drove, and we'd go roaring down the road. He'd say it wasn't quite right, we'd go back and he'd put it on the lift and adjust the linkage. Then we'd go out again and repeat. Took 5-6 times until he was satisfied. It still gives quite a kick when the secondary comes in... reminds me of my old 4 barrel days when the secondaries would open in my '67 383 Barracuda (I know, I'm old.) Now they've moved to a new shop a little farther North (were in Fort Lauderdale) so they're closer to me (Atlanta area.) Cameron even taught me how to crank a rotary... soon as it lights, shut it down, wait for oil to soak into turbo bearings, recrank and off-on the ignition real quick so it goes right to idle instead of having to blip the throttle. Even works with my turbo timer if you're reasonably fast. I like Pettit and plan on going there for future work!

The story on the '99 Turbo's which was sent to me from Manny Lozano.....
"The turbocharger, two of which are used in the sequential setup, is a new Hitachi instrument with an abradable compressor sealing and an "ultra-high-flow" turbine design. The abradable compressor housing sealing has been in U.S.
markets, Toyota being the first to use it in the MR-2 sports car, some years ago. It was one of the more promising items in the menu the Mazda's rotary engine designers had prepared a few years ago to get more power out of the 13B-REW, but,
according to Yamamoto, the company was in a dire financial state, and the design team could not dare ask for the expensive turbocharger. The Toyota unit had plastic layer hot-sprayed onto the housing's surface, a methodology hardly suitable for large scale production, therefore costly. Hitachi has since come up with a new built-up construction of the compressor housing. A formed plastic inner sealing element is bolted onto the main housing, and then machined. The turbocharger is assembled, and run up to 100,000 rpm, abrading the inner surface of the plastic seal, obtaining the closest clearance between the compressor and housing. The new abradable turbocharger has an 80%-plus efficiency, whereas a typical instrument's efficiency is about 75%, according to a Mazda designer. This brings down the compressed air's temperature by 10 C, or about 10%, at the exit of the compressor. Air temperature is still in the region of 110 C (230 F), which is further cooled down by the air-to-air intercooler in the RX-7 installation. The latest trend in high-performance turbo technology is a "diagonal flow" turbine. Mazda asked Hitachi to come up with
several candidates of this design, hoping it would boost the engine's output. They did not quite match the rotating piston engine's unique characteristics. Back to the tube, as it were, to research basic flow dynamics. The fruit of the toil is the "ultra-high-flow" turbine, with its blade length extended and its shapeless acutely curved, enlarging gas passage and reducing flow resistance. Turbo response in the low speed zone has been greatly improved. The turbocharger adopts a smaller diameter turbine, 50 mm (1.9 in.) now versus the previous unit's 51 mm (2.0 in.), again reducing inertia mass. The new "ultra-high-flow" turbine realizes about a 10% gain in efficiency, according to Mazda's turbo engineer. The twin ultra-high-flow turbochargers supply a maximum boost of 74.7 kPa (10.8 psi) at 6500 rpm to the
previous high-flow instruments' 62.7 kPa (9.1 psi) at the same rpm."
For those of you interested in these or other mods we need to support the few real RX7 "Pro Shops" around such as Pettit's (and others) who care and follow through with their customer. The distributors for the most part have never turned a wrench and are just interested in sales........
