running rich. how do i fix?

i just got my rx7 and am trying to learn as much as i can about it. it came with a downpipe and a midpipe on it so it doesnt have catalytic converters on it and it runs really rich. just wondering if anyone knows how this can be fixed without putting on converters.

yeah it smells and i think its making it idle rough. i believe its because the computer is trying to sense the catalytic converter and it isnt there.

uh, these cars' exhausts always smell bad. The ecu will not detect a cat on the car or not, if anything you will be leaner than stock right now.

What other mods di the prev. owner do?

all that was on that was aftermarket was the downpipe midpipe and a racing beat intake. the plugs were changed recently, but it runs rough for some reason, and i had the idea that it was the catalytic converter, and when i really step on it it smells like its running rich, and it goes through a tank of gas really fast.

Pop goes the..... engine

You need a retune on the ECU.

wait, when you are driving and step on it? You mean you smell gas in the cabin or you can smell your own exhaust? Also these cars are not exactly fuel efficient so you will eat up gas quickly.
do you know what vacuum you are idling at? Does it drive normally otherwise? Have the plug wires been changed?

yes u should get boost guage, ast, vacume hose job, and power fc should do the job for your ecu(like 950 used). u are probably running 12-13 pounds of boost right now with stock ecu. thats a no no.

for god sakes, dont be a newbie and shout out 3 mod rule (fk i hate that saying). tell him dont go above 10psi or you'll pop your engine. im running intake (true cold air as my piping runs to the front of my bumper and my airfilter is located there too), 4Xsmic intercooler, all metal piping, dp, mp, catback all on the stock ecu and im super safe as i have tuned boost/keep it down to a 10-8-10 psi boost pattern!

as for smelling bad, just get use to it (its totally normal)

Cry some more.... and good luck with all that.... Have fun with having the air filter getting dirty 4x times as fast with no seen performance gain. There was just a thread about this.... Oh and I like your response to this thread: https://www.rx7club.com/forum/showth...hreadid=295216

We all have our moments that we get sick of the same stuff.. I posted at work and was short I could have been more helpful.

Don't come on here like you are normal and say that it's safe..... why is it called a rule and applied by the majority of owners? You are an exemption to the rule.

Don't come back at me crying out god sakes and you f'n hate something. You sound like a baby.

If you run over 10psi with the stock ecu ...why would going over 10psi put your engine in harm? I dont get how it can blow?

Vacuum on your guage is measured in IN MG (inches of mercury)...unless its metric, then its measured in mmHG - millimeters of mercury. do you mean your idling at 8 (the number 8 on the guage in IN MG)? and at WOT, you are hitting 6 psi on the guage?

Thats not a good thing. stock boost is 10 psi (around .67 bar if metric). and I am assuming that your motor is not ported at all...you should be seeing anywhere between 15-18 (around 450 +/- 50 mmHG if metric)(maybe a little more) at idle.

huh?
you mean 8" hg at idle and 6 psi boost max?
if that is what you meant then you have a leak somewhere around your manifold. Spary some carb cleaner around there and try to locate the leak.

oh yeah, and I told ya so....

damn slow internet, guess that was already mentioned now, but hope for my fix to work...cross those fingers tight!
