cast iron crack and other manifold/metal crack solutions

hey guys,

first off, here is a website illustratign what i have found http://www.caswellplating.com/permat...pairprods.html

i actually went to a local napa auto center here and saw this stuff. in anycase, i have read recently about cracked manifold stuff and how people are having a hard time welding it. well here is another solution which should work. Permatex sells a hightemp (up to 2000degree F.) putty which seals cracks in castiron or other applications. Our high temp engines only put out about 1500 degrees F. temps if tuned properly so we should be ok and will probally melt/pop our engiens before we kill the patch thingy.

~cost for a 20 gram pouch is about 8 bucks

official name: PERMATEX® Hi Temp. Metal Repair Compound

for more info:

PERMATEX® Hi Temp. Metal Repair Compound
Makes long-lasting repairs to high-temp, low pressure exhaust leaks from the exhaust manifold to the muffler. Gets stronger with heat up to 2000°F. One part, water-based ceramic is safe and easy to use.

Suggested Applications:
Cracked and broken exhaust manifolds, headers, furnaces.

Prod 26346 - $9.29

there is even a product they make to fix/fill alluminum whcih can be foudn here:

Permatex® Hi-Temp Aluminum Repair Compound
A single use, 2-part casting repair compound for use on aluminum parts with temperatures up to 800°F (427°C). Developed specifically to repair pin holes, warps and cracks in aluminum castings and molds. Environmentally friendly. Contains no asbestos or volatile organic compounds. Resistant to thermal shock and common automotive fluids.

Suggested Applications:
Aluminum engine parts such as cylinder heads and intake manifolds.

Prod 31372 - $9.49

goodluck to anyone needing repairs, this does seem like a fairly cheap and easy solution to a complicated and possibly very expensive and mind boggling problem many of us have faced before.

Give it two weeks and none of it will be found any place that you filled with it. This stuff is just a temp patch it will not hold. I only wish it was that easy to fix cracks.

I thought about that stuff since I used it on an older header that i've since replaced. The only problem I see is ketting the surface clean enough so that it bonds permanenly. After that is done, then heat coat the manifold. The only thing that scares me is if it ever comes off and goes in to the engine.
