RPMs dropped to 0 and car shut off on highway any ideas?

Hey everyone. On my way back from NYC this weekend, I made it to the PA turnpike and was accelerating onto the on-ramp, my car seemed to miss during acceleration, I didnt think much of it, and kept accelerating onto the turnpike. At about 75 mph my car once again seemed to skip, and my rpms dropped to 0 and the car would not re-start. Any ideas would be appreciated. The car cranks, but will not start up, I have fuel pressure, I do not think any vac lines came disconnected.
Thanks.

As you try and help, I should finish the story of what happened after it stopped. I was on the part of the turnpike with a small shoulder. I coasted off the shoulder and called triple A. It was pouring rain and 90 degrees in the car. They sent a tow truck that of course could not tow my car. I waited 2 hours for a flatbed as giant trucks seemed to pass inches from my little car. Finnally the flatbed arrived and he was uninterested in laying down in the water (from the rain on the shoulder) that was an inch high off the ground. So, after shedding my shirt, phone wallet. I had to lay in flood waters to hook this guys winch up to my car. The kicker was hooking it up on the drivers side, while the semi trucks blew by and threw huge clouds of water 1 foot from my head. Eventually I got the car home in 1 piece, a little wet and a little cold, but home.

Re:

Please let me know when you figure it out. I was driving my car and not pushing it hard and all of the sudden I lost acceleration as if the car just completely bogged down. When I try cranking it up, it starts but it sound like something massive pinging inside it. I am not sure what it is. I have been trying to figure out what happened but the person who tuned my car last made it all the time skip and leaned it out at low rpm that it will shut off by itself and I will have to crank it again. I know it was missing but am not sure how I could have blew it up at low rpm when it died. THe whole day I didn't even push it but to drive it to the person who tuned my car.

May not be related to your problem, but I have experienced cars that will not start/run because the wires were very old and wet (could not get good spark). After the car had a chance to dry out, it would start right up again.

I only mention this because you said it was raining, and because the wires on a 3rd gen can be so hard to change that maybe it hasn't been done for a while?

On a side note, I would call AAA and complain about having to do the work for the toe driver.

Check for spark! Even if one spark plug was fouled it would still run, not well, but it would run. Sounds like you had total ignition cut off is your car stock? Maybe your ignition module went out, doubt it their prity sturdy but could be. Also, check your leading coil that too would cause your car to die (trailings aren’t as major and only control one plug) I'm willin to bet if its ignition problems it might be commin from your coil. **shrugs** good luck!!!

definitely check spark- get a good in line spark checker(if you don't already have one) from an auto parts store and watch it jump the gap. get one like this - http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...lance&n=228013 - these are much nicer IMHO than the light up types, you can measure how well the ignition system is performing by seeing how far a gap the spak can jump

if the rpm's went to zero while still in gear, check out you crank sensors. I had the same problem while driving. Cleaned the sensors and it runs like a champ now.
good luck
