Rim damaged by tire shop! hmm...

(server problems...)
ok, so I finally got around to getting new tires for my car. got 245/45 for the rear and I just noticed when I got home that the rear rims look like someone drove them along a curb for a few miles. so I am quite pissed off right now. one rim has damage all the way around the lip and the other has damage about 3/4 of the way around the lip. the rims were perfect prior to the new tires.

I plan on going back in the morning to talk to the shop about this.

What is the best course of action?

Thanks.

This happened to me when I tried to have Sears remove tires on my SSR Integral's.
They ended up sending them out to a wheel shop to repair them, but I lost use of my car for a week and it completely screwed my work and school schedule up. You have to be really careful where you take your car to have tires mounted.

What do you want them to do?

Sorry to hear about the damage, but this exactly why you get tires mounted at a specialty shop that knows how to handle expensive wheels.

pay for new rims or something...

They messed them up, they should fix them or replace them...I would think anyways.

I think your biggest problem is gonna be convincing them that you didn't do the damage yourself AFTER you left the shop. If you signed for the job after it was completed, and didn't look over your wheels, in most cases, you're pretty much high and dry. That's why you should inspect EVERYTHING after work is completed, and in fact, BEFORE work is completed, make a note of the lack of damage anywhere.

You should see how **** I am about MY car. I insist on driving it into any bay etc because dumbasses don't know how to drive stick, and ride the HELL outta my clutch. I gotta show 'em how to use the doors (my case only), I show 'em how the rims are in perfect condition, and the car has fresh paint w/o a SINGLE scratch, ding, mark, etc. And I make it clear I expect it back in such condition...

come to think of it, I didnt sign anything.

I am the same way as well...I drove it into the bay...they couldnt get the lift set up so I said use a jack, the guy starts to jack the car up right in front of the rear tire (I about had a heart attack at this point)...so I told him I would jack the car up myself.

These are all pretty much the reasons why I work on my car myself....

My friend had his oil changed at a oil place, they put the wrong oil filter on it (it was an SR20DET... no listing for it here in the US), but it leaked all the oil out, and fucked his head up. They ended up sending it to some cheap *** shop to replace the head, and the valves still ticked afterwards, and it detonated on long pulls on the freeway. He ended up buying a new engine.

hey man i worked in different tire shops for 6 years and everytime any of us damaged any sort of rim (i worked on big rigs mainly imagine the cost of a front steer alcoa aluminumrim)the company covered the cost and replaced the rim/s i suggest no matter where you go always use a reputable shop as the little man will put up a big fight and may not have proper equipment to begin with i know that it does take special care and plastic machine heads to do any aluminum wheels with or witout low profile tires NEVER!!!!!! allow steel heads on aluminum rims as i guarantee that is what caused you excesive damage as well as inexperience on the guys part good luck and put up a hell of a fight to get rims replaced or possibly extra tires out of it

Is it the stock wheel?

If it's a small time outfit, more than likely you are fucked. But if it were walmart or something larger you may get them to pay for it. Maybe a bit difficult since you didn't catch it right off the bat.

I would call the shop and have a discussion. Give them a chance to fix it. Take the car to them right away, as the freshness of the scrapes may not last long. In fact, I'd take a photo immediately before any more dirt and brake dust collects on them.

Obviously never take the car to that shop again, and you could file a BBB claim. If it's a franchise, request a feedback form and the service manager will probably bend over backwards to keep you from reporting bad stuff about them. Unfortunately, if they play hardball, I think your only course of action is to make a small claims court claim (costs $200 or something) - but if you reference a price quote on new rims from the dealer, that should get them moving.

This is why I always write down the exact mileage on the trip set, and leave the trip set with at least 100 miles on it. That way you'll know, to the 1/10th of a mile, how far it was moved. Tell them in advance that you want a phone call if any test drives or additional work are required, and also write that on the tag on your keys. I always do this with new shops.

I'm glad to hear you got some $$ for the rims...but how much? Enough to repair/replace 'em?

Not to rub it in, but that's what I was thinking. This car is simply too expensive and high maintenance to take chances w/. When there is doubt, there is none. Just walk away.

Trip can be zeroed, but your odometer, which shows 1/10ths of a mile, can't. That's what I use.

Also, a lot of shops have in the paperwork itself that you sign something along the lines of "you are hereby authorizing our staff to test drive this vehicle in relation to the service performed, only for the purpose of testing performed service" or something to that effect. Hell...that's fine w/ me. I just jump into the settings menu on the PFC, and turn the Rev limiter to like 2000 rpm LOL. Good luck tryin to mess w/ my car now...

On my Maxima, which I just reset the trip this morning, it's the opposite.

Dave, you mean the tenths are recorded only on the trip, and not the odometer? Hmm...I'm gonna have to check the Maxima again... I'm sure you're right tho...I was referring to the FD.
