A '96 FD? Sweet!

It's the synchros and I've been told it's normal. I've gotten into the habit of throwing her in third, then reverse. No more grinding.

Do you come to a COMPLETE stop before shifting? If you don't, then try shifting after you have stopped completely and see if that helps.

I found as a great trick to keep that from happening... is to put it into 5th or (as said above) 3rd and then into reverse... at a complete stop obviously.

I have never pulled my FD tranny before, but it is very unusual for a car to have synchros for reverse. Unless you have two speeds for reverse there is no need for it.
