Replacing Stock Twins

Hey guys,

my turbos are crapping out. I currently have the 99 twins on my car, and am looking to replace them with 99s as well. I have found a set of 99 twins for sale, bu they are separate from everything else (just the 2 turbos for sale). Everything else in my turbo system besides the twins is functioning properly.

My questions is: Can I buy the 2 turbos and replace my old two with these two, or will that cause some kind of issue? Do they have to be balanced and torqued at a shop, or can can I do the install by myself at home?

Thanks,
-Daniel

I'm assuming you are repllacing the two chra sections with compressor and turbine wheel all mated together? If so it is really straight forward other than some bolts being difficult to get out. You will need to remove your entire twin turbo assembly to swap out the CHRAs.

Make a jig while the old turbos are still together so you can clock the new ones correctly.

It can be as simple as some sections of 2x4 screwed to something, but it will save you headaches!

What i mean is how easy / difficult is it to swap the CHRAs. Will there be any balancing required, or just taking of / screwing back on bolts? Is replacing the CHRAs considered rebuilding the turbo your self, or is that actually pulling the CHRA apart?

Thanks.

You remove the old CHRAs from the turbine housings and place the new ones in.

The only tricky parts are persuading the old CHRAs out and clocking the new CHRA so the compressor outlet, oil lines and water lines line up correctly.

To get the CHRA out sometimes it works to loosen the bolts on the lock tabs (cresent shaped tabs that hold the CHRA onto the tubine housing) and rotate the CHRA so the bolt heads line up to where they will hit water inlet or other bosses on the CHRA as you loosen them. Wiggle it out this way from opposite sides.

Not sure if this method applies to 3rd gen twins.

Rebuilding a turbo is when you take the CHRA all apart and replace worn components with new.

Anyone mention pills yet?
Make sure that if you have a 93,94 you replace the turbo lines.
They have the restrictor pills in them. The 95 have them in the housing (which you can drill out )

Not sure about the 99 spec. anyone know?

Not to highjack a thread, but is there a secret to installing the twin turbos? For example does the rear (rear of the car) turbo and oil line need to go on before the front? I'm struggling to get the turbos back on the car after replacing the turbo gaskets.

Cloud of black smoke under accel is the biggest giveaway. Also if there is a lot of in and out play they are starting to get worn.

It's not too hard. I've built quite a few sets of "frankentwins"...here are some photos from the last time I pieces together a new set:

https://www.rx7club.com/build-thread...-951172/page4/ <--photos continue onto page 5.

It's so easy, even my non-mechanical-inclined fiancée can do it! lol
