replacing shocks, is shocks enough, plz read

ok i did some searching but none of the threads really answered my question.

My ride is really rough over bumps and stuff, i just bought the car and i strongly doubt that anyone has ever changed the shocks. It is at current ride height and has good rims and tires.

I am looking at just replacing the shocks with the stock ride height shocks and that is it, just to smooth out the ride. if i replace the shocks do i really need to replace anything else? Also i know on my S10 it was about a 30min job with a lift to replace shocks, is it the same on a FD?

like i said i am looking for a plain swap, no lowering or any of that crap. ALTHOUGH i dont mind paying a little extra for quality.

Thanks in advance for you advice,
Craig

You do realize that a "rough ride" is not necessarily the signs of blown shocks? Typically, if your shock has blown, there is no dampening. With nothing to dampen the spring, the car bounces up and down on bumps like its a slinky.

These cars are known for being rough. What you want is an "adjustable" shock, so you can adjust the ride quality. Take a look at Tokicos. As far as installation, it's pretty straight forward, however it will take a bit to complete.

It might not be shocks then because there isn't really a bouncy effect, but i know that in my s10 the shocks were blown and it didn't really have a bad bounce to it. but what model tokicos should i be looking at? i looked at the adjustable ones and the RX7 isnt listed. I had a prelude before my 7 and the ride was known to be kinda rough but my 7 is so rough that you better not have a drink in your lap

sorry i found the rx7 spot but i am wondering since i have a 92 jap spec should i be looking at the 84-92 section or the 93-95 section? thanks

Cool thanks so much for your replies you have helped a lot, i just looked at the prices and damn 200 a piece. that would be almost a grand for some shock replacements. i know i said i don't mind spendin the cash but gees mahjik you trying to break the bank? lol just playin i am going to look into getting some of these.

but for a smoother ride i would set it softer and a more controlled ride i would set it harder right?

thanks

Basically, yes. You can also find them on eBay for around $450-500 for a full set.

Check out the for sale section near the bottom of the forum home page. People let good sets of adjustable shocks, or cheap coilovers for fair prices all the time. Im not sure what shipping to Japan would be like, but it might still save you quite a bit of money still in the long run.
