Replacing PC/WG Pills

When I upgraded my hoses to Viton I lost the pills that go in the PC/WG actuator hoses. There's no trashed FD's around to pull from. Anyone have a suggestion for aftermarket replacement or alternate source?

Otherwise the easiest thing for me to do would be to order the two hoses w/pills in them from my Mazda dealer and cut the pills out. I think the right callout & p/n's on the fiche for these hoses are 20-341C (illus #1) - N3A3-20-340 and 20-346B - N3A3-20-346A. Can anyone verify I've got the right info here?

buy them from someone on the forum for like a dollor. I believe the wastegate pill is the slightly larger one.

or you could get 2 manual ball and spring valves made and then put them in place and adjust them. I can make them for you for 20 each shipped its the cost of parts really

Anything wrong with this idea? Redo the lines using in-line metering valves that can be externally adjusted to match duty cycles while on the dyno?

Hmm. The info on Summit's web site doesn't match size for drill # as listed above. Also, nothing available that's .059".

Hmmm, they used to be up there. Don't worry about the drill #'s, it's the size that's important. You might call or email them. I'm sure they can get them even if they aren't listed.

BTW, if you want to just order the stock parts, call:

Malloy Mazda
1-888-533-3400
Talk to Ray Crowe

Ray will hook you up. If you want to use valves, you can.. However, the valves do slow response down a bit.

Here's a much better method (but also more expensive):

Your boost is limited to the minimum the wastegate will allow (which becomes something like a 7-6-7 boost pattern).

For future reference, to obtain the wastegate and pre-control pills Mazda you have to order a kit. It's not called out in the parts fiche. The kit contains both hoses with the pills already inserted. It's obvious which is which.

Dealer cost is $24. Ralph Hatley at Almaden Mazda in San Jose (408) 723-8800 will sell them to you for $28.86 plus shipping. The Mazda part number is N3A1-13-ZLY.

Ok, I've signed up just to tech my bro's FD and get the thing running right. We just replaced the stock turbos with effieni turbos and the boost pattern is a little messed. it boosts 12-8-8. I'm pretty sure those pills are not in place since we've replaced all the hoses in the rats nest. However he also has a profec B boost controller, but it's not hooked up, we just have it monitoring the boost for now. would it be possible to hook up the boost controller so the pills are not needed, or are they a must and we should pick some up to put in the lines??? Thanks for the help in advance.

I would suggest getting the kit of Holley Jets. It is hard to get the perfect set of jets/pills on the first try. I had to just buy a whole bunch of hose at a local auto parts store and then keep changing out the hoses and pills until I got the pattern that I was looking for.

If you want a lot of information about using jets/pills to adjust your boost then go here:

http://www.scuderiaciriani.com/rx7/turbos.html#PIL

From this site you will find the following:

From: Scot Ullen

For those of you who want to do some pill tuning for wastegate and pre-spool actuators, it's handy to use Holley carburetor jets for the new pills. Holley makes a large range of jets which makes it handy. I was under the impression that the jet size was also the orifice size in thousands of an inch, but as you will see in the table below, this is only true upto about size 66. The information in the table below was right out of the Holley catalogue.

Holley Jet No. and Drill Size (in thousands of inch) are listed below. 3 columns of data is shown. The first number in each column is the Holley jet size (i.e., 40) and the corresponding orifice size is shown (i.e., .040) in inches.

40 .040 | 61 .060 | 81 .093
41 .041 | 62 .061 | 82 .093
42 .042 | 63 .062 | 83 .094
43 .043 | 64 .064 | 84 .099
44 .044 | 65 .065 | 85 .100
45 .045 | 66 .066 | 86 .101
47 .047 | 67 .068 | 87 .103
48 .048 | 68 .069 | 88 .104
49 .048 | 69 .070 | 89 .104
50 .049 | 70 .073 | 90 .104
51 .050 | 71 .076 | 91 .105
52 .052 | 72 .079 | 92 .105
53 .052 | 73 .079 | 93 .105
54 .053 | 74 .081 | 94 .108
55 .054 | 75 .082 | 95 .118
56 .055 | 76 .084 | 96 .118
57 .056 | 77 .086 | 97 .125
58 .057 | 78 .089 | 98 .125
59 .058 | 79 .091 | 99 .125
60 .060 | 80 .093 | 100 .128

Note: there is no size 46 jet -- don't know why.

Note that there are some jets that have the same orifice drill size -- this is *not* a misprint. Jets with a higher Holley jet number will flow slightly more than the one below it, even thought the orifice is the same drill size. This holds true for gasoline anyway, and may not be as sensitive to air flow. The flow difference is due to the design of the inlet and outlet of the jet orifice.

I know some of you prefer using the needle valve setup, but I personally like to stick with the jets. Anyone else like that may find the above jet size table useful.

The stock pill sizes are as follows...
Pre-control (longer hose) .059"
Wastegate (shorter hose) .064"

Smaller increases boost. Adjustments are made in .002" to .003" increments. Kyle Krutilek and I both use/used a set of 'pills' we had drilled from NOS jets using numbered drills. I carry them in the car when going to a race in a set all the way down to .053". When it's hot you go smaller, cooler go larger.
