Replacing Gasket on Lower Intake Manifold...Easy? Hard?
I'm in the middle of replacing all my vacuum hoses and I'm wondering how much more work it will be to get down to the lower intake manifold.
I took it to Ivan for a lookover when I got it about a month ago and he thinks my slight exhaust smell is coming from a leaking gasket down there. I'd like to as much work as I can on my own but if means many more hours and the chance I'll **** up my new car royally then I'd rather leave to a mechanic.

To get to the Lower Intake Manifold, you have to remove the turbos. This is a major p.i.t.a. I would ask Ivan for a quote, if you need to replace the gasket. Basically if you go in there, you might as well do alot of work, i.e. downpipe, porting your wastegate, rebuild or at least have your turbo's checked, go through your injectors, etc.
On a seperate note, since your doing your vacuum hoses, check your leading injectors, and your fuel pulsation dampner for leaks.

I don't understand how you could get an exhaust smell from a leaking lower intake gasket. But anyway, its a bitch (I've done it on my car), and unless you have a lot of time and patience (and mechanical skill), you should not do this job yourself. You have to remove so much crap (turbos, dp, upper intake, etc) that its a pretty hard job.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I'll just leave it till it fails like Ivan said and then have the downpipe and other stuff also done at that point to save on the labor.
and Paw140..I double checked what he wrote down so maybe the exhaust smell is from the exhaust that is feb back through the intake for emissions?
