Replacement Rear View Mirror?

Has anyone replaced their RVM with anything other than the stock unit? Mine is starting to fade around the edges and the pivot ball is loose, so when it's warm out, it will droop down.

Mine drooped too years ago when it was hot. I replaced it with a used one. Any mirror would work you may just have to glue a new mount on the glass as well.

I tried to pry open the old mirror and somehow shim the pivot ball but I could see no way of getting it open without breaking the glass.

getting the stock mount off the glass is impossible i think. Luckily it has threaded holes so its easy to mount something to it. I made an adapater from the stock mount to a ford clip on mount, and got a mirror from the junkyard for $5 which has 2 pivots, so now I can adjust the mirror height as well.

I have one from Tahoe. external temp gauge, compass, and auto dim. Had this one for about 2 - 2.5 years now.. Taking the metal tab was PIA. I used thin metal wires and cut it out.

It is actually very easy to tighten it up so it doesn't droop. My last 2 FDs have had the same problem and I fixed it by tightening the screws that hold the mirror to the metal tab. Removing that metal tab is a PIA, but is unnecessary (iirc) if all you are looking to do is tighten it up.

herblenny might be onto something though. sounds pretty cool.

^ We're talking about the pivot inside the case of the mirror itself.

A local friend of mine has an FD and uses a mirror with the HomeLink system. It has outside/inside temp, compass, garage opener, and 2 additional buttons that control house and garage lighting. The lighting on the buttons is amber, and it matches the FD interior very well. Extremely neat! I'll have to ask him where he got the mirror.

Also, there is a small writeup on the Robinette website on how to raise your rearview mirror: http://www.robrobinette.com/raisemirror.htm. I highly recommend this!

Didn't the Turbo Miata have a colored Mazdaspeed rear view mirror? That might be worth considering.

But does it mount on the base of the FD mirror?

Any update? I know this is an old thread.

Has anyone found a mirror that will mount to the base of the OEM FD mirror so you don't have to take it off and glue a new one on?

I believe the Miata one does which is probably the same as the RX8 one. I could have sworn that I had met somebody some years ago who said he had switched in one from a Miata or had installed the Mazdaspeed one for the Miata.

I'm getting old and forgetting too much stuff...

the 99spec is more rounded vs the S6 which is rather brick like.

'93-94 correct mirror for sale

I have a new condition 93-94 RX7 mirror that I would sell for $35 plus shipping costs. The '95 has a different base and actually is a different shape. PM me if interested.

There are 2 different part numbers in use for rear view mirror, depending on the year of the FD:

1993-1994 - HG3169220C
1995 and later - HG8269220B

Mounting bases for these are different, so, unfortunately, they are not compatible.
