Is removing the precat a must when taking out the engine?

I've taken out the engine with an aftermarket dp before but never a stock precat. I'm in the middle of taking the engine out for RX72JOCK and the only thing left to do is taking the precat off (if needed). Just wanted to see if any of you have done it before with it on. It would obviosly be faster and less parts laying around

I'm pretty sure that it will have to come off first.

Is 2JOCK having his car converted, or is this just for a rebuild?

We're dropping in a street port along with one of our turbo kits (T63). So take out the precat huh? Damn!! Oh well

well its not a must. the first time i took my engine out of my car i left it on but had to remove that little bracket thats attached to the end of the downpipe. i got it out but it took a extra couple minutes. the second time i took it out first and came out with no problem

I don't know about the precat, but I pulled my engine with no fuss at all while the downpipe was still attached. Perhaps the precat is large enough to cause a problem? The FSM shows the stock precat being removed before pulling the engine.

You can pull it with the stock pre-cat in place. It doesn't get in the way:
