Removing the intake to access the "rats nest"?
I'd like to take off the intake on my 93 rx to take a look and most likely replace all the lines underneath. Does anyone have a diagram or a sort of a how to on removing it?
Thx
Thx
Get hood up high as possible (for first time on intake, hood out of way would be nice, I'd consider removing it).
Remove upper strut bar (if equipped).
Not a bad idea to kill batt. power either, heres where setable breaker is nice to have. Better safe than sorry.
Get intercooler pipe out of the way.
Throttle cable (and cruise too I guess if equipped, if so personally I'd get rid of that, but thats an owners decision of course).
Vacum lines, ground & O2 sensor connectors, on right side of upper intake, PCV & vacum lines going in front/lower center of upper intake.
Bracket holding two solenoid valves on right side front of intake (2 bolts).
Black plastic tank behind alternator (just upbolt and lay over out of way).
Ok, on back of upper intake, throttle position sensor connector. I like to remove bolt mounting map sensor to firewall and lay over intake out of way (unplug connector first).
Remove intake elbow, loosen nuts evenly, two on top & two on bottom. Gas catch can mount uses bottom two nuts. ( nice to relocate, makes job much easier).
Pay attention when removing elbow not to damage/lose rubber o-ring that seals
elbow to throttle body. Remove o-ring and keep safe, I use a paper plate in a tool box drawer. Clean and apply white grease before installing, clean surfaces too.
Ok, loosen 5 bullet nuts that connect upper intake to lower intake (middle one is actually a bolt).
Still some sensor connectors under upper intake to disconnect.
After removal on upper intake, I like to cover holes on lower intake w/a aluminum cover plate I fabricated (you can make one out of cardboard to get by, dont want anything to fall in there dude).
That should do it I think. I might have missed something, its been a while since I had alot of that stuff on mine to worry about, but its fun to remember. I like working on the car, thinking up ideas, reading & learning about things. I do this more than I drive mine (about 2-3k miles a year for mine).
Nice time to do a silicone vacum line replacement and get rid of lots of garbage.
Hope this helps and good luck. I dont know exactly where your at w/your fd but if your about where I think you are I envy you because that means you have lots of fun times ahead. Get all the FACTORY MAZDA MANUALS if you dont already have them.
But, what do I know.
