Question Removing FD Engine??? Please Help...

hey im hoping someone can help me??

im after removing the turbos from my fd....
is it easier to remove the whole engine or can you easily remove the turbos with the engine??

also are there any tips you can give me??

the reason im removing the turbos is because of a suspected oil leak
but until i can get the turbos off i cant tell where it is coming from

any help would be much appreciated

thanks

Is your car LHD or RHD?

If you are RHD, you'll have some additional challenges of the steering column being in the way. For us LHD guys, it's not that much of an effort to remove the turbos. For those close to stock, it's much easier to remove the turbos than the engine with all it's associated components. You'll probably have some single turbo guys say it's easier for them to pull the motor.

dont remove your turbos because of a "suspected oil leak".
Make sure u know whats leaking and possibly save yourself some greif.
removing the turbos on a rhd is a bitch. i hope you got some good tools, a hoist and some mechanical skill.

Turbo's

It can be done in the car ,But as smitter says it is a bitch.I would go to a garage and get it up on a ramp and try and find where its coming from First and go from there.give it a steam clean first.

As for pulling the engine, its not to bad. if u have done it a few times, have the tools and are not gonna be second guessing how to do it, wondering where this and that goes, it would probably be just as easy and time consuming.

Just make sure the turbos have to come off before deciding what to do. Is the car smoking during wot or decel? where is the leak coming from. there are a few possibilities on the turbo side of the engine where u can have a oil leak.

thanks for your reply guys
it is a RHD haha
its defo coming from turbos, possible oil return but need to get the turbos off to have a closer look...
shes had an oil leak for about 6months now & ive been waiting for the weather to turn ***** so i can take her off the road & spend some time on her

dont worry i have all the tools, workshop, ramps & a bloody good heater haha

it sounds like it would be easier to rip the engine out as a whole

is there anything i have to be particularly carefull off when taking out the engine??

im soo jealous of all you LHD drivers haha

thanks tho

I highly suggest checking your oil FEED banjo bolts to the turbos. I had a phantom oil leak too and discovered that the banjo bolts were loose. You can check these from the top by removing the intake piping. If it's not that, also take a look at the oil return hoses and the gaskets. they may be close to ending thier life.

Just my 2 cents, I've pulled about 4 engines so far. Found it much easier pulling both the engine and tranny as a unit. Makes it allot easier installing the clutch that way.

Quick update....

engine has come out... 99% sure its the feed bajo bolts, so have replaced copper washers & tightened down, turbos look in very good order, replace all hoses as they were easy t get to
engine is now back in, started her this evening up to temp all seems good, just need the roads to dry so i can get her on full chat up the motorway, then see if the oil leak has stopped??
thanks ever so much for all your comments lads, all been a real help & now i have done it i wouldn't mind doing it again, lets just hope i dont have too

i will keep you all posted on the outcome
