Remember Brock Stud? How about broke Granny?

Seriously ... for any of you that remember my broken stud way back this summer, I think I have found a bigger foe .... my broken granny ... I mean tranny. I was driving home tonight and my "engine" (so I thought) was make a deeper tone and was a little more sluggish. I really blamed it on my engine and I ordered some new spark plugs and I prepared to do some minor tune up. Well all of a sudden it is getting a lot more difficult to drive and at 2500 rpm the car is throwing a fit about acceleration. I start to put the gas peddle down and I hear a clank and a crunch and as I quickly put the car in nuetral. As I try to put the car back in gear I hear a louder clank and crunch as the car dies. I then proceed to coast into the gas station and get a tow truck to take it my friends shop. Well, I finally got home about 4:30 .... and now I have to figure out what all is wrong because the engine won't turn over either. I'm thinking this is going to be a hum dinger of a problem.

Well if anyone has any ideas, etc ... fire away. I'll probably see if I can turn the motor over manually .... and I might be pulling the tranny. There goes the weekend.

well if everyone is done watching their video I have some what of an update. I pulled all of the under panels, drive shaft, and PPF. I need to spec the drive shaft for excess free play. My friend and I did some trouble shooting before I took everything off (while on jack stands) and there is definately something crazy going on in my car. The motor turns over when moved manually ... the clutch appears to engage/release .... the drive shaft and wheels turn yet when I tried to start I get nothing. Tomorrow evening the tranny comes out so we'll see then.

Damn, i hope you get it fixed soon!!!!

How does your flywheel and starter look? I had a previous car that made a huge crash sound when my starter got loose and hit the flywheel. Needless to say the starter was complete junk after that and the car wouldnt start. However, I dont think that would cause any kind of power loss like you described. It sounds like your clutch ate a bearing or busted a spring or something.....it would still engage but be sluggish and may not start if its not engaged properly. Odly enough my clutch ate a bearing(I think) about 3 days ago and I'm in the process of getting a new one. Mine is starting and I can actually drive on it but when it happend it didt make a weird sound and it still makes noise when I start off in first...its sluggish as well

Anyway, just trying to dig up ideas

When you try to start it what exactly does it do? Will it even turn over of is it complete silence like with a dead battery

ah, you're giving me hope that it is not the tranny . . . I guess I'll take a health look at the tranny. I thought the guy who had it the car before me (the high school kid) had the clutch fixed before I got the car ... then again he could have gone cheap. I get that switchover silence when I try to start the car and it resets my CD player. I could possibly have a fried started too. There is definately something screwy going on with my clutch/transmission though. I'll find out tonight.

I broke the motor!!

Well, I think it finally happened to me. I think my motor went bye-bye. The tranny seems okay and there is like 2 or 3 inches of front to back travel in the flywhell and clutch. I'll pull that tomorrow. Wish me luck . . . .

Does your starter spin when you turn the key over??? If your flywheel is out of place it probably wouldnt make contact with the starter.

Damn, i hope your clutch just came apart!!!! If its your motor I guess you wouldnt be coming to the track. Oh well, I've got my fingers crossed that you motor and trans is ok!!!!

Wishing you luck!!!!!

Well, I got the clutch and pressure plate off and the engine just about ready to pull. The clutch and pressure plate look ok, they are definately not broken, but they do have some scoring on them.

There is some front to back play in the flywheel. It is probably more than it should have and it also rocks a little too. I am really curious as to what the problem is. I was on the phone with Ari and he suggested that is something in the front of the motor (dealing with the eccentric shaft?) ... so the question is to rebuild this motor or get a different reman motor from Mazda? Mine is ported already, but it has been rebuilt once ... what to do what to do ...???

Oh well, more to come tomorrow when the motor is out.

New Pictuers

I added some pictures to the web site.

If anyone has any input on the condition of my clutch feel free to speak up. I think it is ok, but it is scored in one loaction that does show up to well in the picture.

I found someone to rebuild my engine locally for $1500 and he has new rotor housings for $500/pair if I need them. I'll let everyone know what I think after I get it back. David Payne, on the forum, had his engine rebuilt by him so I think I'll be happy. I get to keep my ported motor and 3mm seals now!

I can't wait to have my car running again .... I'll drive 1000 miles in the first day just so I can get that blast of power again!

Ah, didn't mean to leave you out. So fire away on those comments ... you have my attention now. Also what is the 60k on RP motor business ... because that is basically what I had .. is that what you are refering to or is it something else? I tell you the kid who had the motor before me did ZERO maintance to the car.

Sorry to hear about the possible blown motor... keep us posted on what it is that caused the problem.

LOL -- that truck is a land speed truck. It is 40 inches by 40 inches and 24 feet long. It is power by a B-series Cummins Diesel twin-turbo monster. They are aiming for over 300 mph. You should see the good old bye who is going to drive it!

The 60k on an RP motor is all about this........
RP is one of the more reputable shops, so you would assume the motor is done right. You had stock turbos, nothing crazy, and you only got 60k out of it. that is the reason after 7 years as a rotary owner im giving it up for greener pastures.
Good luck with Gurgainers

"Good luck with Gurgainers"

I fell that you are alluding to something about them. E-mail me at spyfish007@yahoo.com if you would please. I would really like to know more off line.

The thing about my motor is that a high school kit had it and he didn't even change the spark plugs after 40,000 miles ... what does that say about the rest of the maintance on the car? He had only the $$ to own the car, not maintain it. When I did my non-sequentail conversion I had my turbos apart. After inspecting them and talking with Keating and looking at pictures of when turbos go bad, it termined they were run with low oil at times and they were also run very hot with improper shutdown. You could see the cracks and various colorations in the manifold and turbos. I guess you might be right, but I'll have to find out for myself.

I did what some said was impossible for my car (that is at its HP level) -- I snapped my eccentric shaft in half!! Oh well, two weeks and counting till I'm back . . . . oh yeah, I'll have a Haltech too.

My turbo guy thinks it might be a combination casting imprefection with really hard shifts over a long period of time.

The car will hopefully be back together in 2 weeks. I have to put in the haltech.

The rotors are good and the housings are good too. That will save $$.

Hey spyfish007,

Since your tranny is out, would it be too much trouble if you measured the distance from the face of the bell housing to the shifter?

Just curious....
