I'm pretty sure that no registered importer in the U.S. can legally import or register an FD for street use.
Here's the list-http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/rules/...list010807.htm

There are no legal companies for importing FD's to the US.

It's a bit late to first consider this, don't you think?

he can bring it up here to Canada and sell it to get some of his money back. there's no way that car can be used for the street..and California is probably the worst state to try and do so in since they're Naziesque with their car rules down there.

dm6, if you want to sell it, i might buy it depending on price and condition etc.

You have no legal options in the US for registering it after bringing it in. It would have had to have been imported by a Registered Importer to be legal (and as already mentioned, no RIs deal with FDs). Selling to Canada is your only legal option.

I'm missing something... if people are buying these cars for 5k, why aren't more people buying them and parting them out, or using them as track cars?

You still have to register a track car if its imported (to federal government at time of import, not necessarily local). They can only be imported for racing purposes so you need to provide proof of the racing division the car will be used. Even then, it can never be licensed once classified as a race car even if it meets local/state standards.

I think a lot of 'importers' simply take the risk that their shipment will not be inspected. However, if it is and they cannot provide evidence that the car was imported for track use, the car will probably be impounded and crushed. Hence, there is a big risk.

If you only paid $5k for it, you could easily part it out for more than that...

Remember, Canadians will be able to buy it, but they won't be willing to pay much for it(typically)
