Noise only in 4th Gear?

I have put in 2 different transmissions and both of them have the identical 4th gear noise. The noise is only under light to moderate load (not under full load) while in 4th gear and is a fairly loud ratting type noise.

Thanks for any help,
Kevin

Could be, but its weird that both transmissions have the exact same noise under the same load/rpm.

I have double checked it several times when it first started on the 1st trany, but I think I will put my stock shifter back in.

Thank you for the input guys!

Another idea: pilot bearing.

Reason being that the 4th gear/input shaft is supported by the pilot bearing and main input shaft bearing. In 4th gear there is no bending load from gearmesh that would keep the bearings under radial load. The pilot bearing is the one thing constant between the two trannys.

Next time I pull the transmission I am going to put a new one in, I have one sitting around somewhere. I was wondering about the pilot bearing but had no info on the symptoms when they go bad.

Thank you for the good input,
Kevin
