Redlining your FD

maybe its just me.....

I'm finding that I don't usually rev my car past 4000 rpm. I don't know why, the car is rather loud now that I have alot of mods to it, but I feel like I am going to blow my engine up. I have no reason to feel that way other than the 10 MILLION stories you read every day on this forum. I have an engine with 20K miles or so on it.

By the time I am at 4000 rpm the engine gets a bit loud, I am sure its normal, but should I redline it, I mean is it really going to hurt anything?

one of the perks to owning an FD (a rotary for that matter) is that you have to drive it hard at least twice a week to help blow out the carbon deposits. Remember, our cars ingest about a quart of oil every 1500 miles or so. lol, sorta like me and beer

Oh crap! hahah I was just doing the same thing today. Lol. But mind you guys that this car was built to redline often and be driven hard. Then again, my exhaust is rather loud too and that's the same reason I don't shift beyond 4K myself on the sreet. Not to mention that im running a stock ecu with a single lol.

Well, the second turbo doesn't even come on line until 4500 rpm, so you're definitely not driving it in the range it was designed for. I don't redline mine a whole lot, since on the roads I drive on, redlining it in first gear, I'll be speeding. Anyway, the engine should easily be able to handle high rpms. I routinely rev mine to around 6K in just normal driving.

Also remember that the crankshaft is turning 3 times as fast as the rotor, so at 7500 rpm (redline), your rotor is only turning at 2500 rpm.

Don't let the noise bother you! Enjoy the car.

I thought the noise was supposed to put a smile on your face taking it to 8k every now and then.

i agree with what people are saying but i still would lay off if your engine isn't strong and you want to extend it's life. to me that's just common sense. pushing your car when it's not healthy has to be worst than carbon deposits. but w/ only 20k you should be okay.

You should never take your car into boost if its having mechanical problems. Let it sit till you can get it fixed.

oh, u changed names. anyways, from what you told me your car engine sounded pretty healthy. i would redline it all the time if i were you. i'm babying mine for another month or two until i get enough $$$ for a rebuild.

Rev it out. I hear too many stories of babied fd's that get carbon buildup and an apex seal chips when the stuff break off. Its good to drive the car hard now and then. Drive it like it was meant to be driven. As long as you maintain it properly you'll be fine. Otherwise there is no point having it. As for running a single on a stock ecu why on earth would you do that?

Put a midpipe on once - I bet you'd sell it Rotaries are loud when modded - my car is kind of annoying loud but when accelerating above 4500 rpms to redline it seems to quiet up a little. If you are tuned right with your PFC, you'll be alright with occasional blasts down the highway - but if you're going to drive it like grandma drives her Tempo, then sell it to somebody who'll drive the thing - you own a 3rd gen RX7 - unless it has boost issues or other problems, enjoy it and drive it!

Wow....are you serious?

Ok, don't want to come off as a jerk; this is all helpful advice

Why do you feel like your engine will blow? Is there a reason? What kind of oil are you using? Are you running an appropriate boost level with your given fuel/ignition setup?

The number one way to keep your FD running well is KNOWLEDGE. I've blown a motor due to poor tuning. Live and learn. Some of these guys are blowing motors due to uneducation. Single turbo and stock ecu? No. Midpipe and stock wastegate? No. 14 psi on stock twins and stock fuel system? No. I can go on and on and on...

My FD runs like a champ. Puts down good power (check my sig) and I drive the **** out of it on the street. Ask anyone who's seen me drive--pluto, ninjak, wonder1and, many others. Hell, I saw 165 mph the other week whupping a C5 Vette. I see redline all the time--90% of the time I merge on the highway, I rev out first, second, and third gear. I've been doing this for the last 3 and a half years.

Have fun with the car, man--it's only fragile if there is operator error involved. It's a rotary, now go out and have some fun

you didn't come off as a jerk, don't worry. Ok first my car was tuned by Ricks Rotary performance (RX7fashion) he did all the mods you see including the tuning of the power FC.

It has not given me ANY indication that its going to blow up. Its just LOUD when I get to 4000 RPM and seems like it must be alot of stress on the engine. But then again I keep thinking that the 2nd turbo was designed to go on at 4500 rpm so I am just a wimp.

The easiest way to answer this question is with this statement:

Owning an RX-7 is a love hate relationship. Even though typically its bad just to rev high, the RX-7 needs to be reved high sometimes to stay functioning correctly. Someone had a good point too, if you arent going past 4000, and the 2nd turbo comes on at 4500, then you certianly arent driving the car the way it was meant to be driven.

Dont think I'm telling everyone to run the *** out of your car, but be outgoing in your driving every once and a while. I mean, turn those slow starts into burnouts, drift those turns instead of taking them slow, and show that ricer what its all about at that stoplight meeting. After all, it IS an RX-7!

Just..... have fun.

Isn't the point of having an rx-7 is to go fast and not drive it like its a nissan sentra?

These are fun cars, get your moneys worth...

If it blows it blows.....thats what credit cards are for

Drive it. There is no point in owning the thing if you aren't going to enjoy it. If you can't bring yourself to do that, sell it -- you'll enjoy something else better. You wouldn't be the first.

These cars can be reasonably reliable if you are dilligent with the upkeep. As many have mentioned, driving it like a granny doesn't seem to help keep it alive longer. Surely there is a happy medium, but driving it slow all the time seems to lead to some problems, or at least does not eliminate the risk of popping the engine.
