Rebuilding a tranny?

Does anyone have experience with rebuilding their own tranny? Basically I'm talking about replacing the syncros. I'm in the process of pulling my motor/tranny, and I've been having a 1st to 2nd grind for a while, and I figure I might as well fix it while I have it out.

I have quite of bit of experience working on engines, but I've never tried working on a tranny. Well, several years ago I tried to assemble a manual tranny from a Ford Probe, but couldn't figure out where all the miscellaneous little pieces went (NOTE: I didn't take it apart, when I got it it was fully dissassembled in a box. So I don't feel bad about not getting it back togther ).

They just seem very complex with a lot of tiny parts, but I'm always up for a good challenge. Are there any special tools needed? Should I try and tackle this myself, or would I be better off just taking it to a tranny shop?

you need a puller set, or really long lady fingers to pull all the bearings off

Most important thing you need is some good pullers. You will need some LONG arms (about 18 inches of reach) to get some of the things apart. You will also need some pieces of pipe of different diameters to pound bearings back on and stuff.
