rebuilding rear calipers

I recently took my rear calipers apart to rebuild them. Unfortunately there is a snap ring at the bottom of the brake cylinder that needs to be removed. I own two pairs of snap ring pliers but neither one will fit inside the cylinder to remove the smap ring. I've looked in a couple of auto parts stores but it doesn't look like any of the ones on the shelf will work either. Has anyone removed this snap ring and if so what did you use or more importantly where did you buy it? I don't like buying these sorts of tools online because it's hard to see if it will work simply by looking at a picture.
