rebuilding my uncles fd

sup fellas , my uncle and i finally decided to rip apart his engine ..it has been overheating and always in need of coolant we checked for leaky hoses and tried burping but iin the end it was always the same ... so we decided it was the coolant seal givin away and just as we thought the rear housing inner seal had a half inch gap..maybe we broke it the seal when we took the housing apart because it was stuck on another one . i dont know ... but this is our first build and were just thinkin about getting the atkins O rings kit which cost abotu 150ish .. everything else seems to be fine .. need expert opinion on what part should be replaced adn what to look out for anything will do .. thanks much

Replace all the springs and if you can spare alittle more $$$ new seals would help you in the long run. Good luck!

I'd recommend getting the RA and mazdatrix rebuild video's if this is your first rebuild, they helped me a lot on my first build.

With the engine out it will be a good time to re-do all your vac hoses with some hose techniques silicone hose and test all your solenoids/actuators. Dale clark sells some viton check valves that are also a great investment, cheaper and better than stock check valves.

It's a fun thing, just take your time and check everything at least twice and make sure you have plenty of room to stay organized while you do it. The longest part of the build is cleaning and spec'ing out all the old parts to make sure they are still usable. One thing I would NOT re-use is your apex seals.

twin- yealp thats the first thing we bought a few months ago ...watched it .. and decided to give it a try ... hahah without the video i dont think we woulda of did it ..probably woulda send it off to atkins like i did with my motor .. but thanks to both of you guys for the input .. 2mm apex seals yes?

Yeah I went with the RA super seals (2 piece, 2mm) and on used housings had 115/118 compression when I tested it after 2 months on the rebuild. The ALS seals are supposed to be the "best" from what I've read but they're also the most expensive I think.

The biggest PITA is clearancing the side seals. If you can re-use your old ones you might give that a try if they're in spec. If not, order extra ones cause it might take a few tries to get the angle and length correct. Aaron Cake on the 2nd gen side has some video's on youtube of clearancing the side seals, definitely worth a look on how to do it right.

fully clean then inspect all your plates and housing. many times dirt and old oil will hide some minor defects that can cause major issues down the road. also how many miles were on the motor? i would check all the coolant seal placements as they may have chipped causing the seal failure.
