Question Rebuild It Or Buy A New One????

Hey This Is My First Thread, Ive Owned Many Cars, But Im New To The World Of Rx7's I Have A 93, And Its Blowing Smoke Really Bad Out Of The Exhaust, I Think The Oil Return Line From The Turbo Is Leaking And Not Only Do I Have Oil Burning From The Hood (which Looks Really Bad Especially In The Morning) But I Also Have Smoke (possibly Coolant) Smoking Out 3 Times As Bad As From Under The Hood.... It Has A Sweeter Smell Than Exhaust... Should I Rebuild, Buy A New Engine Or What... Can Anyone Help Me Out... Not A Tech.. Not Too Sure What To Do

Welcome to the world of FD's - please turn your CAPS LOCK OFF. =)

You will find many people on here do rebuilds for fair prices. Rotary Resurrection boasts rebuilds from as little as $1000, but realistically a full rebuild will cost you anywhere from $3000-$5000 depending on mods and that parts you choose to use.

You can buy a shortblock and gasket kit, perhaps a rebuilt set of turbos and go that route. It'll probably save you some money if you can pull and replace the engine yourself.

Be careful from who you buy from, be sure to get references and read the good guy/bad guy forum. I've bought engines off here before and been ripped off on things from a hood to an engine. Thats few and far between - ask around before you buy from someone without references.

This is a choice you're going ot have to make. If you are comfortable with doing a swap yourself - i would buy a prebuilt engine (WITH PAPERS AND COMPRESSION TEST) or a reman from malloy mazda. If you don't want to touch it.. then have a shop do it and be prepared to pay about twice as much as if you did it yourself.

I don't know any locals in your area, but check the area forums they may be able to point you in the right direction.

i think you might want to check into verifying exactly where the oil and coolant is being burned... you might have a turbo/turbos problem.

Unless you spend $4-5000 on the block only, there's no such thing as a new engine. Not to mention the other things you need to address, maintenance such as hoses, fuel system, turbo rebuild, etc. on top of the shortblock which can easily equal the cost of the shortblock rebuild.
