Rear Wheel Bearing Direction?

Getting ready to press a Timken 511019 wheel bearing into the hub to wrap up a lug bolt replacement job on my car.

There’s no indication which side should be pressed in and which side should face out.

Does it matter?

thanks!

Too long since I did this job and I can’t remember. …sorry. And I went OEM so maybe there was some indication you don’t have. You do have a C clip to deal with. If you still have the old bearing maybe that will indicate which side was out, and then compare it closely to your new bearing.
Also didn’t read thru this old thread but maybe something in it that could help. Free bump to top regardless…

Thanks @Sgtblue. I read some old threads and your tip about hitting the axle with an air tool was really helpful. It slipped out by itself without any kind of beating.

A lot has changed since the early 2000s when a shop press was required to do this job. I used a $70 bearing press kit from Amazon and got the hub/bearing out and then in within minutes.

In terms of the bearing itself, I just wanted to double check because the bearing direction does matter in some cars, such as those with sensors that rely on a magnetized section of the bearing for speed, abs, etc.

After comparing to the OEM Koyo that I pulled out, both sides look completely identical and neither side was magnetized.

I decided to press the Timken in with printed text facing inward, similar to how the Koyo was installed.

I will update this thread if this was ultimately a mistake for posterity. Otherwise, I have a feeling it will be okay.

Typically, wheel bearings have an inner portion that attaches to the shaft or hub and an outer portion that is often slightly wider. Make sure the wider portion of the bearing is facing outward
