rear seats vs bins.
rear seats vs bins.
Hey guys im currently knee deep in my black interior conversion and I was wondering around how much lighter the bins were compared to the rear seats. This question was raised when i added a 10' inch sub to my fd which had to have weighed 60-70 lbs and at this point i am trying to be a little weight concious by not adding to much dead weight seeing how the seats are just for looks. any help is appreciated!
With subs and amps in there, the rear seats won't make much of a difference. If you go to the track or whatever, just remove the sub and seat/bin for the time being. Downsizing the heavy stock battery is the easiest way to shed a significant amount of weight, but with the increased load from the amplifier it might not be feasible for your needs.
I cant say I actually weighed the difference, but from memory the bins were actually heavier. HOWEVER, the difference wasnt noticeable at all. If they are different its got to be within 5lbs at most. Just clean misc junk out of the car and you'll save that much
I would stay with the bins. Just because of the plain fact of never having to haul your buddies around (or having to make stupid excuses not to). Put a woman (or women) in the front seat, and tell your buddies to f*** off.

hahaha i dont think id need an excuse the seats are absolutly useless for carrying people lol. i think the appeal to the seats is the nice jdm touch they have or just having something not all 7 owners have....

Haha thts a good idea. The only reason i even thought of the a significant weight diff is because i read somewhere tht the Spirit R type A is said to have better performance the the type b because of the Bs seats. must have been BS.

Here's why I have this attitude toward open space and lazy dudes:
I have a 12" RE Se12 pushing 600w in a rear facing rear ported box(not the loudest but it works) in the back of my car (Volvo V40 estate that sits 5, aka awesome college car). But anyways there were 6 people I was hanging out with and we decided to go to taco bell or somewhere like that so we all piled in except for one of us. So this ************ walks around to the back of my car opens the trunk and hops in. At first I was like wtf? but then I had an awesome idea. I popped in my bass cd, skipped forward to: Phil Collins - In the Air Tonight (DJ Knoxx mix). I made sure everything was good to go and proceeded to make my friend scream mercy. Everybody in the car was telling me to turn it down, but I was just laughing too hard. Needless to say I've never had problems with too many people in my car again.
So.....THAT'S the appeal of the seats. I always wondered why anyone would go the distance and put 2 seats in the back of a "pure" sports car...seats that couldn't fit anyone comfortably at that. It's the JDM factor eh? I had no idea Spirit R Type B's had them....thanks for the knowledge. I can see the appeal now.
But I'd stick with the rear bins myself. You're paying for a two-second conversation piece. "Oh you have rear seats......cool." On to the engine....or the total awesomeness of the car in every other aspect.
And also the ride factor listed above. I can see your buddies laughing at the thought of how small and cramped the space is and how it's impossible to fit in......but it'll be done anyways for the "laugh" factor!!! "We can do it!" It'll be a good story. "Remember the time when two of us sat back there....I mean just look at that space!!!" Seriously, look at it. It's small!

getting seats for mine, I have many friends. So taking two people somewhere someone can sit sideways in the back. I use the bins for nothing. The seats fold down and they're deep so you can set something in them and its not going to roll around too much.
The seats are totally pointless but my daughter can fit in them so it makes it somewhat functional until she gets older, as long as you got the passenger seat all the way to the front you could fit a young child if you have one or there is no leg room at all...
Just curious, what kind of stuff do you guys store in your cars? Just in general, not just in your 7.
I normally have:
-Basic tools (pliers, screwdriver, most common allen wrenches etc.)
-12v Light/Spotlight (you would be surprised how many times I've used this)
-If its a bad winter, a blanket or extra jacket (just in case some ******* gets creamed and I get stuck behind the accident)
-Emergency flashers in case I break down
-Duct Tape
-Small fire extinguisher (gotta love euro cars with fire extinguisher compartments)
-Pens/Pencils and something to write with
That's the stuff that is always in my car just because.

10mm socket - to remove bumper incase I need to get onto a tow truck
Mini phillips screwdriver
Ratchet
Standard jack
Duck tape
Nothing else at all, I hate clutter in cars

Can't relocate the battery to the rear seats......
I also enjoy only having 2 seats. Leave the rear seats to tubs like Supra's and 3000GT's...

This is true. i think ive seen it relocated to the trunk before but i do see where ur coming from. im not crazy about the idea either but i think a change to the interior might be nice.

I prefer the seats. They're pretty useless as seats but the bins are just as useless.
It opens up the car a little and feels less cramped, and you can have someone with you and still put a few bags in the back. Can also fold down the back for the occassional large box or whatever.
I know people put their batteries in that plastic bin, but the idea of that thing going flying in an accident (realistic or not) prevents me from doing it. Batteries belong in battery boxes bolted to the frame imo. Maybe I'm over reacting though
