Rear End Noise... Help!!

Hey guys,

I went for a drive in a friend's FD the other night and it made me realize that my own 7 is making the LOUDEST rear end noise ever. Does anyone know what it could be? I am just so used to it that I guess I never noticed.

I am on eibach/tokico combo suspension and the FD I rode in has stock springs and shocks (i think). I just had my tires replaced and have not had an alignment yet, which I'm planning on getting this weekend. My diff has new fluid in it. That's all I can think of pertaining to the rear end. oh and my car has about 110k mi on it.

I'm almost positive its not the bearing because I've searched the forum for bad wheel bearing info and I have none of the symptoms.

I would describe the sound as a mild version of riding on flat tires. Its a whirring noise that increases/decreases with speed, not load.

maybe Adam can chime in and describe the sound better.

thanks!

wheel hop? differential mounts go bad, replace those and get a diff bar

110k, hmm, i'd get a bushing kit and replace all the damn bushings in the car, that will prolly elminate all of your woes and feel really nice

oh wait, didn't read whole thread....that whirring noise could be bad bearings, and you might be riding flad so you need a camber adjustment as well as an alignment

is it like a whinning noise? or like a gear chatter?...maybe your ring and pinion are loose. check your pinion depth. and backlash to make sure that your rear end wont get all chewed up.. ive had this problem before when i swapped out a set of gears to 3.73s .. they made an aweful noise. and eventually they will wear down and you could just blow our your whole rear....

Are you running any braces at all ? Are you running stock diff and engine mounts ? Make sure before answering

To me, the noise sounds like the rear end has no fluid in it. Randy has assured me that it was changed recently. The volume increases with speed, not rpm. The noise is uneffected by acceleration or braking.

It feels to me like something is way too tight in the rear end. Its definitely not a suspension noise.

well yeh . the faster your car is moving.. as long as it is on the ground and not flying .. Ha.. loll. the your ring and pinion is also moving proportionally to your speed so... the faster you go.... the faster the ring and pinion spin.... the louder it gets.. trust me.. ive had this problem .. take off the cap on the rearend.. not the whole rear diff cover just the filler cap and feel around in there.. make sure u have fluids.. then check to see if that fluid is burnt to crap.. smell it.. if it is really aweful and almost makes you want to vomit... probally time for a change. then check for any metal shavings.... if you plan on changin out your rear diff fluid.. when you take off your pan. there will probally be a magnet on the rear diff cover. make sure to get the metal shavings off.. but if there are like chunks.... time to check the ring and pinion out

I put Redline in the diff before I turned on my car after the swap (after i let all the other fluid drain). I have stock diff mounts and stock engine mounts, although I do have an engine torque damper.
