Rear Differentual Case Split in Half T2 LSD install Questions

Just broke my diff casing in half due to wheel hop from street tires (I usually run ET streets which absorb hop). I have had another differential in the attic along with a t2 LSD, a t2 LSD rebuild kit, new bearings, crush collar, driveshaft 300m axles, urethane bearings, etc...for the past five years.

A couple of questions: is it really necessary to rebuild the T2 LSD? I hear of a lot of guys just dropping them in and they work fine without rebuilding...thoughts?

If I drop in the T2 LSD, how many of you have had to shim it in order to achieve the correct gear pattern? My pinion gear will be untouched.

Is there anything else I need to know before disassembling everything? Is there a write up anywhere?? I did search for all of those who cry about people not searching...

Thanks,
John

I have dropped them in as is and had them rebuilt. If you have the parts, I'd rebuild it like vosko said. They important thing is you set the gear lash correctly. The service manual shows how to do it but you need several tools (summit racing has them for cheap) and need to take a few measurements. You will also need to order a handful of shims from Mazda. I usually take a measurement to get a starting point, then order a bunch of shims close to that number. Then send back what I don't need. I always replace the carrier and pinion bearings, as well as the crush sleave and pinion nut.
