Rear Differential Cooler?

Today I was at my friends WRX Tunner and we were discussing the possibilities of a differential cooler. It would work with an eletric oil pump and you can mount the cooler near the bumper (Ive seen this before), anyone got any pics of this or ideas? I thought itd be pretty cool.

granted i would imagine that cooling anythig that get that hot could be good but i would also think that wheel hop has hurt more diffs than heat has. Has anyone actually reported damage to their diffs on there 7 due to extreme heat?

it would be cool (literally) but more than likely a waste of money. you might want to ask some people who actually race FDs if they have ever had a problem with the diff overheating or if they run a diff cooler. its definitely overkill if the car is not tracked often.

Well first I wanted a transmission cooler like automatics have. Then he brought up the idea of the differential cooler (4wd WRX). I thought it was a nifty idea. Perfect for AutoX or Track.

I cooked my diff fluid at the track. Fortunately the rear end didn't cook as well. A rear diff cooler would do nothing for you as far as autocrossing goes. The M2 race car has a rear diff cooler but they need to run for an hour plus at a time. For "normal HPDE" track driving a synthetic oil, such as redline, etc., would suffice. That is what I swiched to and I haven't had a problem since.

Sounds like a ridiculous waste of effort and money to me. There is already a fight to get enough cooling air to far more important parts of the car -- radiator, oil coolers, and intercooler -- to give up any something of little benefit to anyone.

It amazes me how much money some of you guys spend (or want to spend) on mods that make no sense.

You would need a diff. cooler if the car is going to see some endro type of racing. Other than that, even 2~3hours straight racing on the road course, the cooler is not needed. If the car is for street, don't even think about it, spend the money on food or hookers!

I know that RE Amamiya time attack car has one but, hey, they are a company, they get free **** or money.

How would one go about a transmission cooler for manual transmission? Would you cool the brake fluid (since its used for the clutch) or some other way?

Why are you so set on doing these mods? Look at what the regular road racing guys run (Max Cooper, Chris Regan, Manny (SleepR1), Peter Hahn, Cossie, etc). None of those guys find a need to run a tranny or diff cooler. Do you even road race the car?

Yes I plan to race it (Homestead Speedway). The Differential Cooler was just talk, but I would be interested for the transmission cooler and how.

Dont bother unless you are a serious racer or have a dedicated road race car doing maore than 30 0r 40 min sessions. I have considered running my 7 in a 10hr enduro next summer and that will be one mod that I will add for that event.

For endurance racing only, differential cooler.

I put redline in both trans and diff, did 4-5 track events over summer, then changed out both fluids. trans oil looked like new, diff oil was black from the heat. torsens crank out a lot of frictional heat on road courses.

For just a few track events, change diff oil out every 4-5 events.

redline is good stuff, i remember my old 1G had the typical bastard shift gremlins, the redline gear oil made it shift like a decent car
