Rear counterweight (PICS)

Hey guys,

I am doing a clutch job and chasing an oil leak problem. I think some oil has been coming from the rear main seal, so I ordered a new FD rear main seal.

That said, when we took off the rear counterweight it looked a little worn (didn't know these could wear out).

The car was running an ACT HD 6 puck clutch and streetlight flywheel.

Is this normal for this part to wear like this?

Thanks
T

Seal lip will wear into that and the front pulley, nothing to do with the clutch. In high dollar components, they'll metal spray and grind to reclaim or use something like a redi-sleeve. If you were particularly concerned, you could dress it with emery tape while spinning it up....and you could also play around with the spring tension in the seal.

I'd be more concerned about the irregular deep axial scratches I think I see causing leakage than the circumferential wear from the seal.

^Agree. More trouble than it's worth. By the time you pay someone to put it on a lathe and remove enough material to get it smooth, it may not seal. It probably sat on a shelf somewhere and corroded, and someone previously tried to clean it. I'd just order up a new counter-weight and main seal and be confident I won't have to pull the transmission and FW again.

Make sure you go with the oem rear main seal. Should be orange with a NOK stamping. I've had issues with some others.

Thanks for the tip, that is what I did. Looks like the previous owner was running the RX8 seal that is thinner.

I didn't look for the NOK stamping and already installed the seal. Would it be visible when the seal is on? Should I replace it if i don't see the NOK stamping?
