really Wierd cooling issues

alright,
i've been having cooling issues for the past couple of weeks, but some of the things that are going on some people think im crazy when i tell them so see if you guys have any ideas, i'd really appreciate some insight.

i started seeing the temp gauge climb a couple of weeks ago, so i first flushed the coolant system. and it still does it, the thing is......i can turn on my parking lights, and when i do, the temp goes down to midlevel and is perfectly normal on the temp gauge. If i dont have my parking lights on and drive around and its hot it will start to heat up and the gauge will rise real quick, now first what the hell do the parking lights have to do with the temps? i read something about the fans comming on? that why i started turning on my parking lights whenever i drive now, and the temp will stay fine, but if i switch off the parking lights i have problems almost right away with overheating. I thought maybe the thermostat? but if the thermostat is bad then the fans wouldnt really help right? wouldnt it still overheat? i was going to try getting a new radiator cap next?.......the other thing i noticed is, i get a lot of that water gushing sound, localized boiling? i burped the system plenty when i flushed it out, but i still get the gushing sound. The other wierd thing is.....when i run the car and then turn it off after im done SOMETIMES if i turn it back on a few minutes after turning it off the buzzer goes off and the light comes on, but usually it will go away pretty soon, and wont come on at all after that. i checked my coolant levels and it looks like its dropping, it was low everytime i check and i pour some water or coolant in, and fill it up, but every couple of days it will go down about a couple of inches. i hope its not my coolant seals? or something serious....could it be the radiator going bad?, and last......if my gauge is reading in the middle when i drive with my parking lights on does that mean its ok to drive? i mean can i trust that gauge, as long as the parking lights are on the temps are fine as far as the gauge is reading.......HELP, thanks guys......

This happens to me too . I have to leave my AC on ( ac has no free on) so the fan will cool the radiator. I didnt know the parking lights turn it on either..

man I am sorry to tell you....I have the EXACT same problem and its the coolant seals... try this....take off your radiator cap turn the engine on and watch the coolant spill over the top of your radiator cap...also look at your exhaust after start...there will probably be alot of water vapor coming out. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news....I had to face the same reality last week..

Do you have any mods to your cooling system. My car used to boil a lot before, then even worse after I installed my FMIC and relocated the AST. It was too low. I know have relocated it very high (near level of filler neck) and there is NO boiling. Do your fans ever turn on if you leave your parking lights off?

Are you losing coolant??? Had the coolant light come on?? I'd agree with jetmech you could be looking down the barrel of an engine re-build. My RX is currently in pieces in the shop at KIWI RE *shameless plug* Due to a coolant failure. It's pretty simple to get checked, book in a time with your mechanic for an exhaust gas check. They let the car cool then attach a tester to the filler, & start the car. Basically as the coolant warms the tester will change colour if there's carbon monoxide in the coolant. If there is... well, bend over & prepare for a large bill.

It's not all bad I guess, seeings my engine is in bits I'm gonna get it ported & slap on a PowerFC (Remember that for any mods more than pod filters & a cat-back exhaust the factory ECU probably won't do the trick & you don't want to be back for another re-build too soon right???

Good luck, hope it isn't a seal issue. It ain't nice to go through RX-7 withdrawl, belive me

I wired up both fans to ignition, so they're both always on. Takes an extra min to warm up, but it was really easy to do, and motor runs cooler all the time...
