Ok here is an easy way to check.. I have a 97 rx-7 and my friend has a 93 he converted his lights to look like mine but the difference is that the 93 tail lights look somewhat smoked.. they look a little dull compared to the post 96... maybe u can check by keep both lights side by side to check if they are post 96 or converted...
Hope this helps

Shhh, don't call them fake. You'll make all the guys with the cheap "converted" lights feel bad.

I think poster of this thread is trying to tell whether the taillights are authentic JDM strictly by eyeballing the pic.
I'm with those who say they're the homemade deal. Compare Regan Rotary's converted light to the one "Daily1" posted.

They might be real. The only way to tell is by looking VERY closely at the actual circles. On the real ones, the lights(circles) come "out" from the black background. They are slightly raised. That's really the only difference.
I compared the real ones next to my 30 min job, they did not seem to reflect light off the black portion the same way spray paint does. The fake ones have a mat reflection and the real ones looked much, much better reflecting light (probably coated with a high quality clear....not spray paint). And mine are EXACTLY the same as every other fake one out there..no better, no worse.

i dont know, those look like the real thing to me..... but what do i know, i have only converted 50+ lights
the way you can make sure is the real one has a dull surface and the converted ones have glossy surfaces. i check by shining a light onto the lense inside and if you get a noticeable reflection, their fake..... if not, their real or someone spent a lot of time trying to make them look real!!

also, you cant tell by a pic because many factors come into play.... camera, lighting, flash, ect...
you have to see them in person!
also, whats wrong with converted ones.. i convert them and i myself have the converted ones.. i cant tell the diff, only when i am less than a feet away and as Bricke said, you save a lot of money for something else

Unless someone is trying to pass it off as real for a sale, what does it matter?
However, the one benefit that the genuine lights have over the converted ones is that they're not hazy and covered with scratches...
