RB exhaust install problem

I have a dual tip RB exhaust installed on my 94 FD. The exhaust it replaced was a custom setup, so I had to purchase all new hangers for the install. I can only assume that I got all of the right parts and installed them correctly. Unfortunately, under certain conditions, the exhaust will knock against the tow hook loop which is only and inch to the right of the muffler tip. Is this common with the RB exhaust? Should I remove the tow hook loop? To anyone who has removed this, how do you get to the nut on the top bolt?

I have a similar issue with my RB dual. Mine hangs too far back and sometimes rubs against the bumper lower fascia. As well, it nearly rattles against the hanger near the tow hook. I loosened the two bolts by that right-rear hanger and retightened them and that seemed to reposition the tips some, so try that first. It helps IMO to spray a little PB blaster on the rubber hangers to lube them so that they are free to settle into position on the metal hangers.

The bigger solution suggested to me was to loosen the bolts on all exhaust components, move it around until things sat better, then re-tighten. Based on my last time bolting them up, my flanges don't align well and I'm tempted to simply take it to an exhaust shop and have them redo/fix/modify the flanges as needed to make the whole thing line up better.

Sorry that's not a fix, but it's what I know.

No problems with my RB dual. I don't think your problem is a common one.

Thanks for the replies. It just occured to me that intead of removing the tow hook, and to save me the hassle of bending it, perhaps I can remove the lower two bolts, and just rotate it around the top bolt towards the front of the car. That way it would still be there and I can just keep the lower bolts in the car in case I need to use it.

When I installed my RSR Single tip, I went over to local welding shop and had the hanger bent a little to have more clearance.

Just remove the tow hook, and you'll save a couple of pounds....Also the tips will be more visible(bling bling). For the top bolt you need an extra long socket with an extension.

Would anyone be interested in crawling under their car and taking a picture of how the exhaust is hung? I purchased all new hardware, and installed it in what looked like the correct way, but maybe I was off. It seems to be held in place well enough, but the muffler is slightly lower on the passenger side.

i had some issues fitting the RB exhaust I purchase last year too. I had a chance to compare the new RB exhaust I bought last year to the one on my new FD and found that they differed slightly at the point where the rear muffler bolts to the front pipe. it is a minor difference of a few mm but it's there.

Mine is supposedly the 'old' style RB with plain steel construction and no logo on the tips.

However, since the old style ones don't carry any RB logos, it makes me wonder if mine isn't really an RB/RSR part. I did some research on the new vs. old RB parts and found very little at the time.

remove the tow hook, it can be done with the exhaust still on. (very tight) but do-able

That's the way the professionals would handle this problem. It's not uncommon to have to adjust pieces of new exhaust components to get them to fit properly.
A good exhaust shop should be able to handle this. If a hanger can't be bent by hand, often times they'll use a cutting torch to heat the hanger to make it more pliable, then they'll bend it to the proper position. Sometimes changing the rubber insulator that's used with the hanger to a different size or style can also do the trick.

EFS.0 - Way to come through, that was exactly the shot I needed. I looked under the car last night and I was happy to find that my exhaust is properly hung. Thanks for the assistance.

I removed the tow hook and the knocking is gone. I thought there was going to be a nut on the top bolt that I would have to deal with, but thankfully there wasn't. The lower nuts are welded to the tow hook. Still, removing this was a pain in the ***. Not much room to work with under there. I could only turn the socket a couple of clicks at a time.

Thanks for all the replies.
