Rather low water temps...

Ok, here's one we don't see often.

My car runs at 83-86C

With the fans on it stays at 82C.

Fans off, I did several hard pulls on the highway today too see what the deal was.. I can't seem to figure it out. Temps were a little cool today, but still.. 84 was as high as I saw. No fans. Normally, around town or in traffic I keep them on for a little reassurance. I understand that the thermostat may not even be open at this temp (OEM thermo).. but the temps stay really low.

I'm running 60% water 40% Mazda coolant. Koyo Rad and a Old school Greddy 3 row that doesn't completely fill up the mouth..

Anyone want to comment on this?

Justin

What was the ambient temperature when you saw this? Its pretty rare for an fd to actually overcool. The only time I've seen this was in the middle of an NJ winter with a Mazdacomp radiator. After cruising for a bit, the car would get cool enough so that the double throttle would close and cause me to believe that I was having boost problems. What kind of gauge are you using to monitor coolant temps and where is it located? Might want to test the sensor.

So you're monitoring temp with the PFC commander right? It's possible that your temp sensor may be bad. If you know somebody else with an FD you may want to swap it real quick and see if anything changes.

You have a separate H2O gauge don’t you Justin?
Maybe those new fans are so good they don’t even need to be on to workj/k

I'm using 2 sensors. The stock one with the PFC to monitor, and an aftermarket one in the filler neck wired to an autometer.. They both read the same.

Ambients were ~50-55F

I have two seperate sensors.. Both reading low. It's pretty strange..

Well my FD with just a Koyo Radiator and wrapped downpipe (dont know if this matters) never even opens the 16lb cap.

ahhhh, this sounds familiar to me. when this was happening to me, my thermo was stuck wide open. are you experiencing longer warm ups?

I also have the old school greddy intercooler where did you get piping for that to the greddy elbow? Maybe you could copy yours for me and ill pay you? this is assuming we both have it mounted the same way. Not off topic at all right?

edit nm I just saw a video of your car. you obviously didnt figure out the intercooler pipes either haha
what strut bar do you have? it looks like the stock with different ends

How long is a usual warm up? Lets say leave it idle, and then if you were to drive right away. (no boost)

leaving it at idle i would guess 5-10 minutes. i really wouldnt know, but from start up to driving it takes me about 3 miles driving easy.

Hmmm this could be possible, maybe a leak in it, 10 minutes sounds the normal. Hmmm maybe after going non-seq, removing the airpump, and gutting the cat. There is alot of airflow through the engine probably keeping it cool.

^ highly doubt that. rotaries run so hot nothing will really help it keep cooler then 180f.

Ive even changed the cap thinking it was bad, but the system never reaches 16lbs. Possible heater core problem? I NEVER see over heat problems.

Ya, getting that reactor core out of there significantly keeps the engine bay temps down without a doubt.

that sounds like a vary probable reason why it could be running cool, though that’s right at the temp it should be cracking open, so as long as it doesn’t go any lower maybe not, it couldn’t hurt to pull it and check though.

I did get the IC pipes figured out. Just used the stock lower elbow from the stock IC and a 2.75" aluminum pipe to the IC then on the TB side I used the steel pipe from red-rx7 that he made (Original owner of IC).. I really don't mind using the stock elbow on the turbo.. Works great.

Strut bar is a knock off.. Bought it for like 40.00 here a few years ago. Works great also. I just polished it and powdercoated the feet..

k I want one of those strut bars eventually how can I get one? ive had all kinds from oem to ebay oem is nice just too expensive right now. Yeah you did get it to work but it aint pretty AT ALL. You need to get that fixed bro your engine bay is too beautiful to have that stuff in there. I have a pipe that I was using thats came with the kit but you need to use the stock elbow. It looks really nice. Maybe if I dont use it you can. Is your intercooler mounted with just 2 brackecks on the underneath? Did he have custom brackets or did it come with them? check pms@!

My car idling in the driveway with 80 degree temps outside didn't see higher than 88c sitting there idling for 30 minutes.... I think its due to our lack of stuff in the engine bay, and single turbo

This happened to me and my mechanic said it was the stock sensor. As soon as he changed it, it was reading perfect and the car was running better because the computer would read the normal temperatures.

What did he change it to? Just another stock sensor or something else?

Just another stock sensor. The heat and years fried the old one and my temperatures where reading 65-70C on the greddy temp gauge and PFC. When I gave it some good runs it would get to 84C max. After he instaled it, It was running 87-94C which is normal here in Puerto Rico. If I hit the pedal hard, it gets up to 95-99C. This is what all the cars here have. This was with the stock radiator and motor.
