Form follows function
iTrader: (8)
I'm not going to comment on the lamps themselves as I don't care; however, what is the truth?
The truth is that you (and everyone else who's chimed in) has voiced nothing more than an opinion. At the end of the day, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I would love to tell some forum members how shitty their cars look TO ME and how useless some of their mods are, but I don't. So why can't form follow function? There are many ugly or POS mods that people do to ostensibly improve performance....
In this case it allows the OP to gain cold air. He is on the right track. Those of you naysayers who suggest cold air is not important are wrong. The temperature differential at the turbo inlet can easily be 100deg F more than ambient, especially for some of you guys with FMIC's. If you don't think that affects compressor efficiency, you are dead wrong; calculate the density and consult your favorite compressor map. Temperature (heat) is additive and any increase to the front end will be added to the heat of compression, plus the difference in compressor efficiency [at the different intake temps]. So that 100deg delta will likely appear at the compressor outlet as something more than 100deg..
The result is that you need to make your IC about 30% to 50% larger (typically about 6 to 9" in length) just to remove the heat that you could otherwise save just by using cold air to begin with. The name of the game in turbo/IC system efficiency is density recovery. When you add AI, you convert some of the sensible heat--the heat you can measure and feel--to latent heat. The heat does not go away, it is still there, just sequestered. Air becomes lighter as it is saturated (wet), not heavier; therefore, while AI will drop the sensible IAT's, the air will usually not be as dense as if it were reduced to the same temperature by conventional means (without AI). Thus applying AI as a band-aid is easy, but not the most efficient approach to system design. What the AI really does for you is provide really good, robust detonation suppression and/or introduces additional fuel for combustion. Cold air is always a good starting point and a good idea.

If we all did the same things to our cars this forum would be dead. We come here to get new ideas about what we like and don't like. For every taste there is a different flavor (bad translation from PR). There was some funny **** on this thread though, you guys are certainly creative ball busters!

Well said ^ SpeedofLight I never considered the delta could potentially increase, I always assumed it would remain the same.. nice.
1) This wasn't an impulse buy. I've wanted to get rid of the stockers to make room for the intake and thought about it since I bought the car. These lamps are the cheapest means to that end and naturally will cheapen the car a bit.
2) Yes, of course I'm keeping the pop-ups.
3) I'm not sure why some people think moving the intake won't help. "It's just going to get compressed/hot so don't bother.." Uh.. what? Haven't you noticed a more powerful car on cold days? That is not just because cooler air is hitting the IC. Colder, denser, more oxygen rich air going into the intake, DOES MATTER.
And Cheesepowder... Please spare us. I lost count of the number of assumptions you made in your post. A money management book on an rx7 thread? Come on man, party foul... The first step toward financial independence would be for all of us to sell the 7 to some poor sap who wants the liability of a race car with bad gas mileage. But we don't want to talk about that here. I'm completely aware of the choices I make. I'm "broke" now as I'm working on my Masters and I refuse to touch my investments to play with my toy car.

The only projector headlights I'd ever go with are the EVO-R ones..
Seeing as how we're on a Forum where everyone is going to voice their opinion, here's mine.
Out of all of the different projector headlights for the FD, the ones you purchased are by far the ugliest of the bunch. I kind of skimmed over the thread, but if it's a matter of needing SOME/ANY form of projector headlights in order to accomodate a custom intake setup...then it's at least understandable why you went with a "free" or "cheap" pair of projector headlights...
But for the sake of your car, please purchase some better-quality, more aesthetically-acceptable pair of projector headlights SOON.

Allow me to retract that comment. Reading it back, I do indeed sound asinine. It's just that I saw "Amazon", "I'm broke", and "close to my last choice" in the same story and jumped to the conclusion that your money pit virus had mutated. My apologies for questioning your finances in a thread about headlights.

It's more for looks IMO. The channel is small and not very aero. It was on my car when I got it and I like the look. Plus everyone always asks "whats this hole for?"

unfortunately i dont have the original bumper...this body kit is horrible! all i would need is the front bumper but alas im out of funds for this car...it was a pile of poop before it entered my hands...now it runs great (new engine w/ streetport)
the front bumper is held on with some bolts/washers/nuts, the previous owner had drilled a hole directly through the front to mount on the top of the fender. the kid doesnt line up with either headlight and the fenders dont line up with it either. its such a bad fitment that we installed the headlights and aligned the hood correctly, put the bumper on and the hood overhanges 1/4 inch on the passenger side, pulled the bumper out quite a bit doing the best we could do but its just a horrible bumper....

Wow, I am not going to say anything about those lights but if you really wanted to get cold air into the intake you could have been more creative and did some kind of air tunnel from the front bumper and would have cost less, I love how your car looks the way it is without those lights, I have the RE lights and love the look but sometimes I do wish I kept the car's exterior completely stock other than the wheels......
At the end of the day it is your car and you can do whatever you want with it, look at me I got a screaming fish bumper...LOL...
