This is just a hypothetical question that I'm curious about. So don't assume anything you shouldn't. Does anyone know what people would pay at auction for a RX-7 set up for road racing? Basically the same as the black M2 race car on their web site? Approximations are fine.

where are planning to auction it? if it's anything resembling a general auction, and not some sort of high-performance auto auction specifically (and i don't know of any of those off the top of my head), you can probably expect to take a beating because most folks will want to pay much, much less for a modified vehicle. you're gonna have to get lucky and hope there are multiple folks looking for a '7 set up for racing to get decent money for your admittedly very nice '7.

 

It's not mine I'm asking about. Unfortunately the circumstance would be general public auction I think. I'm not certain what the requirements are in CA.

As Ed pointed out, getting a good price at an auction requires multiple serious buyers who want the car. I would only enter the car into an auction with a reserve price option. I would thinks a fully sorted road race car would be priced in the low-to-mid 20k range with today's bottom market FD prices.

It all depends on who shows up. I wouldn't think that many people would even know what they are looking at. I'd guess $15K or less.

If the car was at a dealer only auction then I'd guess even less unless someone truely knew what it was.

 

yar, i'd agree w/ turbojeff; at a general auction, most folks are going to be looking at bluebook prices, and go *down* from there because it's modified.

I'm not sure if the car in the above thread ever sold. I wish I could afford it.

 

As a rule racecars of any type and of any level of preparedness go for bottom dollar prices (unless the car has historical racing history).

 

better off having it sit an events on a trailer with a big for sale sign on it with a phone number. target audience IMO not the general public.

 

Thanks for the input. It's not really a function of where would the best price come from, it was just how much would it fetch at public auction since that's the only place it could be sold I believe.

Damon is right.

Easily observed at Barrett Jackson auctions. This weekend (via Speed Channel), there was a 2000 Ferrari 360 built and raced only twice (at most). And when I say "built", I mean fully race prepped professionally. And it sold for an astounding $90,000!!!!! The normal 360 sells for roughly $150,000+....so I nearly fainted when I saw that price!
