Smile R1 Oil Cooler Install----need a quick answer asap

Hey guys,

I have my FD up on jackstands to do some maintenance, and I want to install my newly refurbished R1 oil coolers on my car while it's up. I'm going to be leaving the lines in place and just swapping out coolers-----I have some seals/crush washers coming to me from Ray at Malloy but they havent showed yet. I figure now is a good time to do the job b/c I have the time tonight, but am wondering if my existing seals will be reuseable or if I'm looking at a leak without replacing them.

Basically, I'm just being impatient. This is one of the few systems on the car I've never screwed with so am looking for some input from those who have done this before. Damian, GooRoo, anyone who can chime with your opinion, I'm all ears

The crush washers are a one-time crush. So technically, you should replace them. However, I've reused them in the past and never had any problems.

I have also re-used crush washers before when I was in a bind. The proper way of course is to replace them everytime.... but if it doesn't leak then you are good to go...

Unless there rough on the surface it should be fine.

I've had good luck reannealling crush washers. Simply heat them with a torch till they are red hot and let them cool. Guaranteed to work or twice your money back

Crush washers can often be bought at any auto parts store. If you are not willing to wait for Ray, go to a local parts store.

PS. I would probably use the old ones if they look OK

Well, after close inspection---now I know why Ray charged me like 6 bucks for each of them. They are a copper crush washer with an inner rubber seal---basically a two part seal.

My old ones aren't looking so good, so I'm going to wait for the order to come in. The old 'do it right, do it once' adage strikes again, hehe .

on a side note, rich, you may to consider installing a drain valve in the balance line between the two coolers...you'd be surprised how much extra dirty oil comes out at your next change

I'm late here, but like Mahjik, I've reused them successfully in several different places on the car before as well. For most I'd recommend replacing them though because I've had a couple times where it didn't work out. Damian keeps a bunch of various sizes in the big toolbox we cart to events.

For later reference, other places also sell these 'Stat-o-seal' washers...

I get them from here because I can get them overnight for ground price:
